Host Compound?
Does anyone have any experience with Host or similar dry compounds? I have a lady that would like her wool rugs cleaned with a dry method only. Any rug gurus or dry compound gurus out there?

Re: Host Compound?
I've never used the Host compound or a similar product, but I have used Joe's S/OEncap to clean many hand made Persian rugs (Bleeders), and always had great results, and happy customers.

Re: Host Compound?
I have a lot of experience with dry compound and cleaning wool rugs. I've tried pretty much all of the compounds and for me at least the Strong Dryzone is by far the best.
Make sure you do a very thorough prevac first and then give it a light mist of S/O/E and sprinkle a small amount of compound on it and work it in well with a CRB. A lot of people make the mistake of using too much compound. You can always add more if you need it. Just be careful around the edges because the CRB will "suck" it in. After it has dried for a while thoroughly vacuum it again. It will look great once done. When using the CRB on it it will probably look like a dog shedding.
My customers love the way their rugs look when I'm done. I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Host Compound?
Nice explanation on that the dry compound...would never have though about combining with S/O/E, but I am starting to see S/O/E getting combined with a lot of cleaning processes.

Thanks! S/O/E with the compound works very well.

North East suburbs of the Twin Cities. Hugo to be exact. I did live in Nebraska for a few years in the late 90's.

Lots of Nebraska in this thread. Saabtrash, myself, and Dick Cavett...kind of scary.
I actually know Dick Cavett to some degree as his Sister was one of my teachers. Met him a couple of times...sharp and dry wit.

He could tell a joke that was so cleaver that you missed it for an hour. Then it finally hits you on the drive home and you can't stop laughing as the passing cars think you are having a mental breakdown.
Most people on this board probably have no idea who we are talking about....wikipedia probably just jumped up 50 hits on Dick Cavett.

Re: Host Compound?
Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm gonna order some Strong Dryzone and hit it with S/O/E.
The lady was told when she bought theses rugs to only use a dry method and never get the whole rug wet at one time or they would be ruined.

Are they hand or machine made rugs? What cond. are they in, or how soiled are they?
Her being told that, is likely to be similar to all furn tags that say "Dry clean only".

Re: Host Compound?
maybe those rugs were made with not the best dying method Pro? they maybe warned her because if it gets wet at all the colors will run.
Ive used encap on tons of wool rugs with no issues, thats when there are greasy spots or stains... if there are no visible stains then we run matrix all fiber rinse.

Yes, I've been using S/O/E to low moisture clean all hand made bleeders for the last year or so.......when I discovered they don't bled with this method.......
I start by Pre-Vacuuming them very well, in 2 directions.
Then I spray on S/O/E and run the CRB over it..........but if it were heavily soiled, it would prob be a good idea to Pad it with the 175. But I don't normally see expensive hand made rugs in that cond, so I just run the CRB.
Then once dry 20-30 min max I give it a good post-vacuuming.........Done!

Re: Host Compound?
Machine made rugs and light to medium soiling. She vacuums them really well. She hasn't let anyone clean them in quite awhile because no one was willing to use a dry method as she was told to do. Her last cleaner stopped doing residential. I'm just trying to meet her needs and make her happy and give her clean rugs in the process.

Re: Host Compound?
You know, I personally can't remember seeing a machine made rug bled, not saying it can't happen but I do think the chances are VERY slim.
If it were me I would pick them up and test them for color fastness and cleaning accordingly. If they don't bled at all then I would use HWE to clean them, but of course don't tell her that.
When you return the rugs clean and bright, she will be happy.
And as always, don't cheat yourself, or take on the liability of expensive/valuable rugs (real or imaginary) without charging fair market price. I always shoot for $2-3 a sq. ft min. Sometimes a little more or even less depending on rug size, and total sq footage of all the rugs being cleaned.

Re: Host Compound?
Hey Saabtrash, out of curiosity, what brushes do you run on your crb? The medium or soft bristles?

I use both soft and medium. If it's an expensive rug I'll almost always use the soft ones. I do let the customers know before I start that it may look like a dog shedding while I'm cleaning it. I've never had a customer complain and they've always been very happy with the end results.

Re: Host Compound?
Thanks Saabtrash and Joe. I've just got medium bristles now. Looks like I'll be looking into soft ones.
