The van started trembling a couple of days ago. I'm hoping it just needs an alignment putting some 31s in the back. Wish me luck. Anybody want a TNT? Rob do you need another one?

What do you mean by "trembling"? If it is a "shaking" up front, it is ball joints...probably lower.

What is up with the TNT? What happened?

Trembling? A few more details would be nice. Does it tremble while braking or accelerating? Does the steering wheel shake while going down the road or braking? Does it tremble while turning corners? Some more info please and in detail.
And whats up with the TNT? I have a buyer if it's in good shape.

When customers "tremble", you know you're charging them enough.........when your van trembles it's usually not good. :geek:

That's the problem with using a 150 or 1/2 ton van for what we do......it's just simply not rated for the weight we demand. Mad

3/4 ton min is what's needed.....at least you'll know next time you buy one. wink

I have always run 1-ton vans for that reason. I always end up carrying too much junk and need the extra capacity.

They do make some HD ball-joints these days, but weight also wears out the springs pretty quick which can lead to many issues.

You should be good for at least 1-2 years now Mo, that is still cheaper than buying another van.

Broke the spindle? Our was the spindle broken already?

Kind of odd to break the spindle on a ball joint replacement.

A spindle is pretty hard to break, that's weird.

I am assuming that they are using the age old method of smacking the spindle with the sledge hammer...the impact shock will often allow the ball joint to pop out.

Most of the time, if a firm smack doesn't do it, you turn to the air tools and a joint separater to avoid what happened to you.  They clearly kept hammering and cracked the spindle eye.

Translation:  Operator Error...don't pay for the new spindle or the labor cost.

Sometimes you have to bang it like a cheap drum, but the mechanic is also aware of the risks involved which normally results in using heat and a spreader.

In my opinion, they are responsible for the fracture and you should not be charged anything for it. It is just part of life in a shop...my family dealt with that for 40 years.

Now if they are covering the cost of their mistake; make sure they don't add on somewhere else to cover their cost.
# years ago it happened to me. Found out later they charge me $400 for a $100 part(which they had in stock) and extra labor for what I wanted done.
I confronted them weeks later and got more than the over charge back. A threat to picket them out on the sidewalk got them to see my way.

That would tick me off as well, but I wouldn't hold that against them. They were trying to solve your problem and get you back on the road quickly, but they pushed the envelope a little and it cost them.

I would bet dinner on that when you speak to the mechanic, he will tell you that he knew he was risking the fracture and that the last thing he said before it broke was "I'll try just one more swing and then I'm switching to air tools". It has happened to me a few times.

Some of you might remember the 1/2 ton conversion van that I started with. I put my first TM in it (hydra cat) every time I took a left turn I thought the van was going to tip over.

With a 3/4 ton all is well with the world.

The front end on my 2000 dodge was replaced last year when the ball joint separated and the whole front end fell on the left front tire. This year I have a 2000 gmc sevanna that I need to have some front end repair, hopefully its stronger and better design than dodge.

That GMC should be a 1-ton Brian and butler puts special springs up front that is exclusive to them. In other words, very stout up front and doesn't dive when braking....even when fully loaded with water.

The ball joints are the cheapest thing in the world on a 1-ton, but they will last quite awhile.

Yup 3500, that is some great news. I am looking forward to having a better and safer setup. Even though nobody is calling for cleaning I'm getting equipment ready for brighter days.

After reading Brian story Im glad I took care of this quick. The mechanic said the reason for the wobble and eventual ball joint replacement was because I didn't pack the bearings correctly when I replaced the rotors. He charged me 420.00 to replace bearings and ball joints on both sides which I thought was fair but he got the spindle from the junk yard.

Rob he showed the new puller he bought for 800.00 from Snap On that will work on all vehicles he doesn't always have to bang the snot out of  them.

Hey Brian keep you head up spring is on the horizon

Did he already have that tool and couldn't get it to work, or did he just buy it from the "lesson learned"?

I'm betting on the latter.

He had a tool but it didn't have enough spacers. But yeah breaking my spindle was definitely the catalyst for the purchase and I helped pay for half of it
