A co-worker of mine is retiring at the end of this month and called me up looking for advice. She was thinking about starting up her own business caring for plants. It seemed odd to me, but there is actually a pretty good business going around to businesses to water and care for plants...especially in lobbies.

She has a degree in horticulture and marketing, but like many, she worked for a steady paycheck for 30 years and knows no other way to live. We spoke about how to get her started and it was fascinating to be on the other side of this type of conversation this time.

She had all the negative assumptions that we all did when starting out and it was enjoyable being able to correct those now so that she didn't have tolearn it the hard way. Things like pricing for example. She assumed that she would have to be the lowest bidder to find work and was setting up her pricing accordingly....I guess that marketing degree has some rust on it. Laughing

I still know nothing about that industry, but being able to help a good person launch their new venture was really rewarding and one of the high points of my year. cheers

I've heard of businesses like this, also "renting" plants for lobbies and such.

Things get changed out every so often to give a "new look" to businesses.

Good luck to her.

I guess they call it "Interior Landscaping" and I would never of known about it until I met her. I guess it makes sense, not everybody has a green thumb and having a bunch of wilted and dead plants wouldn't be good for the image of a business.

Strange what niches you can find out there.

I agree, I think that kind of business would be quite enjoyable. I will be watching her progress closely.

This is a little off the subject. I "helped" a fellow carpet cleaner a number of years ago. He pumped me for all the information he could get and then proceeded to try everything he could think of to screw me. He even used my company logo in his advertising. I had to have a cease and desist letter from my lawyer. Sad
