Newest new guy
Hi everyone,
My name is Jim and I'm just starting out doing carpet, ulphostry, and tile and grout. I purchased a 97 Ford E250 with a 04 white magic commander. It was cheap but beat up, frozen up, and pretty much parked for the last four years. I spent a good part of the summer fixing it up, and besides the HX I have everything dialed in. I've got a few dozen jobs under my belt but that includes a few friend and family ones. I hope to learn some tricks and tips from the guys with more experience.

Sounds like you are sprinting right out of the gates. I think I actually worked harder for the friends and family than I ever did for my customers that followed, so you are getting good experience there.
There are a lot of good people around these boards and you should find a ton of information. The rest will be up to you.

Tough market out there in NJ. The last guy I knew from that area followed the snow birds down to Florida and now cleans for mostly the same customers in Daytona.
Nice when you can follow the customer migration when you decide to retire.

Small world milspec. My whole family is in Daytona, actually Port Orange but right down the road. I'm just doing this part time as I have a full time job, hopefully it will pan out.
Re: Newest new guy
Wow, it's almost like you and Rob ( milspec ) are related, he also has a full time job and clean part time

Welcome Jim...you are way ahead of the curve re-building your machine...if it fails at some point you will have a clue on what is needed to get you back in biz! Good luck and hope to hear more about you. These guys really have great info to share even though they each specialize in certain areas.

This site is turning into a Walton's episode lately. First Devon and now my brother from NJ.
Most part time cleaners bring encap or a portable to the table, but you are bringing a truckmount to the fight right off the bat. Despite my over-use of cliches, you should be able to do very well.
I don't know what your hours are, but I would suggest looking mainly for commercial work to start with. They are often evenings, lots of footage in a single night, and no witnesses....a mistake can be corrected without anyone being the wiser. Not so much on residential where the owner is present.
