Every year I always make a point to accomplish a few things.

1. Improve my fitness and run a few local races.
2. Learn at least 2 new skills that are useful
3. Keep the business growing...even if just by a small margin
4. End the year without regrets

Looking back over 2015, it looks like I stumbled.

1 I hung up my running shoes for most of the year and got sluggish and fat (by my standards anyway).
2. I learned to play guitar (at a very basic level), but attempts at other skills failed.
3. Business did expand by 8 commercial buildings, but residential was way down
4. I should have finished that box truck last Spring and installed heat in my garage. I also should have decided on launching full-time.

Over-all, it was not a year that I was very proud of and will gladly close the book on it this week. At least it will serve as motivation for 2016.

How would you rank your 2015?

This was the year of burnout for me and it showed in my
gross YOY. I had a few family members pass away and it messed with my head.

I need to find that joy and excitement I had when I started the biz eight years ago.

The positive side if this year is that I finally started taking care of my body by exercising and eating better. Im
down 15 pounds and I no longer feel beat up after a couple of jobs. I have another 15 punds to go to reach my goal

Nice job Mo, you and Dp are doing a great job on the fitness front.....I will have to get back on track with a run attempt on Jan 1.

Maybe we go to a yogurt bar in Vegas instead.....what the hell am I saying? You are stuck with heavy pasta and cheese.

I never made New Years resolution, I strongly believe they're made to be broken, lol.
I just get up and do them, like I did early this year by joining a gym, that's probably the best decision I've ever done in my life.
I feel 2015 is a successful year but kind of flat, no excitement, I know my costs of running business is down while my gross total is probably around the same as 2014, which means I probably have to pay Uncle Sam some more $$ in Feb or March, but that's life, you earn and you spend what you need to spend, save what you can for rainy days and hope those days never come so that you can invest in something else.
I'm not truly excited about 2016, I guess that's what happened when you get older ? You don't really care about certain things that you get excited about a few years back Very Happy

dp1, You say you don't really care about certain things that got you excited a few years back? Hope your not including women. You don't look a day over sixty. I turned (like sour milk) into an officially old man last month. Medicare card makes it official. I celebrated by riding my bicycle over the mountains eight times in eight days. We may have to get older but we don't have to get old.Consoling

RR, absolutely not, I'm still VERY excited about women, lol.
It's funny we were just talking about how a gay man react if there is a super model or miss USA stripping naked in front of him, I don't know how he's not going to get excited with that kind of view, lol.
Now before any gay man attack me over this comment, I'm all about pro choice, you do what's right for you, no judging from my end, lol.

2015 was okay but once again had a few breakdowns that killed several weeks.

biggest goal for 2016 is zero breakdowns and steady 2 jobs per day per van. Of course many days will be more but if we can make that a minimum each van will bring in $100k

I think you were cheating off my notebook.....wrote the same thing and stuck it above the computer. Razz

The breakdowns will probably still be there, but hopefully not as bad as 2015. That steady diet of 2 per day would make for the perfect start to my full-time plans and seems very achievable.

Rob...typically each van you add will hurt the other a small percentage. Rob, I suspect you should try and exceed those numbers a bit, they are NOT bad numbers at all but when you solo and O/O you should be able to gauge and control better than one van without "YOU" in it....if AC works in one of those vans I guarantee its the one making more money. If not I suspect they do about the same because AC rotates or even runs the business from the office...either way something will give where he is not there....AC am I close? this was my experience and Ive learned was very common for others. Im not pushing as hard as I can and will exceed that.....if I added a second van it will come at a cost. At one point I had 3 vans and an Air duct cleaning business end....it was nothing like one van....ever! A good business man can do magic but he will work!

These are the kind of things that I will learn as the season opens up, right now it is all fog. I've worked for 4 companies in my years, but never had to manage the books, so it is all new as far as expectations.

As the day approaches, I find myself getting job offers outside of cleaning. The local Sheriff asked if I would be interested in becoming a part-time deputy to handle all their prisoner transports like I used to do for the State Prison system.

My plan is still to run full-speed at cleaning, but with all the offers and trepidation, it is getting difficult not to second guess myself.

I agree with Scott, I used to run 3 vans doing 5 - 7 jobs each van, had 5 guys full time and 1 part time, not easy to manage as each employee has different attitude and habits, my pet peeve is the inside cleanliness of the van and that's the toughest to enforce, the guys clean them but not to my satisfaction.
Now I only push 4 - 5 jobs a day, may be 6 if the jobs access are not that difficult, any more than that, 2nd van goes out.
I hardly advertise in 2015, so 2 vans going out don't happen often, I can advertise more if I want to push it but I just don't have the desire to do that, I'm going to grow slow this time.

Rob, since you said yourself that you're a zombie, you should clean full time and work for the sheriff's dept full time as well, you still have about 4 hours left in a day to take your beauty sleep Razz

Rob, the books are easy when you are "the" guy....just use a software program and it will take care of itself....find a CPA who can close the year up and your done! I I used to have someone do all the books for me and now I'm finding its the easiest part....takes little daily effort and bam! I could even do it weekly...but I'm to ADD. you will be fine...the other job offers will always be around for you if you need it....dont cut yourself short.

Oh and to stay on Topic Rob...My numbers are better than I thought they would be and I dont have a full year under my belt to say if I hit my goals as far as improving....I did start up...that was one. I launched and that was successful and I am getting orders on my tool I have in the concrete industry by the pallet loads, so, I guess I am doing as expected for myself....Im not big on making yearly goals because its hard to see what life deals you anyway....I do the day by day goal method and it works best....that way I can tell what days and how many were short on performance and why. I am fighting my instincts to push harder...but I dont need to and the money was never the reason why I did this....dont get me wrong! Im making what my time is worth but its not the focus.

Here is an example...you guys know my son works with me right?...well a couple weeks ago we were working on a home where the owners live in California....she was concerned about cleaning carpets upholstery and a few outside tasks...with my son I planned a Saturday work day...we were raking and had two rakes...as I was raking heavy wet leaves my handle broke (it was old) my son was quick to give me his....I guess he figured he was going to watch work happen.....lol it was then he realized what it was like to work with a short broken handle. This lesson was worth the whole price of the job....I kept telling him THANKS! what a good kid to give dad the better handle....LMBO! that wasnt the deal but he went with it. Im building a man...a good man. While his cousins and friends are playing video games and having parents cater to them hand and foot my son is going to be ...well, not that! He is a great kid and has work ethic!

We cleaned for another person and the bill was pretty steep....when I told the lady the price I said you talk it over with your husband and let me know...she said I dont need to talk to him...paid me upfront and said do it next week...my son said when we left...thats how I want to live...buy what I want! I dont know of any video game that teaches that. so, you see? I get paid to teach my son. His manners are spoke of daily by others!

I got off Topic huh?

Luckily, those things are directly related. Reduce one and you reduce the other. Cool

As for the books, I agree Devon, the software helps. Right now, I use Quick Books and send it all to my accountant to file....that part is okay.

My weak area will be the estimating of supplies, inventory, and employee-related concerns. Not being big into residential, it will be a whole different set of numbers for me and I really have little history to work from.

Unless you are ordering bulk for savings I order as needed...Jon Don ships next day to me...so, I really dont need to stock much ...just order when Im getting low...keeps it fresh too. Employee concerns will be your biggest issue...I have said this before but got little on the agreement side...Get a young man from a fast food joint....eat at a place for a week or more and you will notice one....They are looking to be rescued...they dont make much and really like the idea of getting out to work...Ive had three of my best employees this way. If you can find one that has a kid or even a car....its showing a lot! they are very mold-able and like a check that beats a $150 fast food joint check...if you can get one that shows the ability to eventually do a job without you...youve scored. even when I do all my own work its nice to have the fireman run and do one thats small while I do something else. Dont over think it! just jump in.

I already have a couple of young ladies asking to work for me....wives of co-workers mostly. It might not be a bad idea to have 1 or even 2 available for those customers that prefer a gal cleaning the house.

Just starting to study that dynamic in this area to see how viable that would be.

The jump in is starting to sound less scary with each passing day. I spent 2 hours talking with the Insurance Company in town about claims that they have paid and how I could have saved them a ton....he took 20 business cards and said that he had a "few jobs" for me next week.

Funny part was that I was in there to pay for my insurance (I was late) and walked out with them wanting to give me money. Very Happy

Good job Rob....Bye the way, I worked my sister on several cleaning jobs!...people are doing many things when they are looking to clean carpets...opportunity is knocking if you want to do something usually easy but different....I will and do! waiting on a $2k check for some work and %80 was not carpet cleaning. lol If you can schedule you can do anything that sounds like you can make some money at. Ive painted a small room...moved furniture, raked the yard for out of town customers selling a place, etc etc its about convenience and being trustworthy...those two have an amazing value.!
