Pest control call

Post by ACpower1 on Mon Feb 01, 2016 3:25 pm

Ok so would like some input as to how you guys would have handled this.

call is from a guy who says his name is Shane,  and says he wants to schedule a carpet cleaning,   couch cleaning,  and mattress cleaning for a tenant.

I go ahead and schedule him in and when he gives his email its xxxxx@spraguepest.com    so I start wondering what this is about.   First red flag,   he schedules it like a normal customer and doesnt say Im with sprague pest control

I called him back and left a message just saying I had a few questions about the job he scheduled with us,    he doesnt return the call right away and the job was short notice coming up real soon so I called the tenant whos number he also gave.

I asked her if there was any kind of pest situation or treatments that had happened there and she pauses for a moment,    then says  "well Ill just be honest,  my neighbor in the unit next to me found one single bed bug on her couch,   literally just one bug.     I had them do heat treatments on my unit out of my own paranoia"

we all know there is no such thing as one bed bug,    they lay like a million eggs/day or something crazy

I told her that if they saw one of these things then there are probably thousands of them

She gets mad and says she took the day off for this,     I of course told her that we arent equipped to handle this type of job and if there is a pest/bed bug situation we need to know about it before hand and we werent happy with the way the job was scheduled without clearly telling us why we are coming to do the cleaning.

I said I need to see the paperwork from the company that says there are no traces of infestation,     she tells the company to call us and they never did.

once again she calls back and says "so are you coming or not,   did they call you?"    I said no they never called and no I think we have to pass on this one based on the risk involved

How would you guys have handled this?     would you have taken her word for it that there was no bed bugs in her unit only the neighbors?   I didnt,   felt like she was hiding something.

One major reason why I was so worried about this,     a friends brother got bed bugs in his rental house..      first company $6,000 with no success,    second company finally got rid of them for good but with a $10,000 bill.         I have heard that if apartment buildings get them it can 10x that easily,      this lady is in an older building where I dont think they are going to deal with anything like that.

I've fought these bed bugs for the last 2 years as they are becoming common due to the immigration rates in this area.

You can track a single bug back to the house with your luggage and if you catch it in time, that might be the end of it. They don't always end up at infestation levels.

What confuses me is that they paid for the "heat treatment" which is a method of super-heating the room to kill them off....sort of like throwing the room in a dryer. It isn't always effective, but it is a common practice.

Since that was done, my guess is the she is just paranoid that there might be some blood suckers lurking in the house. The key is that there wasn't any found in her unit by the exterminator, yet they treated anyway.

I think she was just looking for some comfort. Your reaction probably scared the wig right off her head and validated her fears of being dragged off in her sleep and devoured.

I would have fired her too for being dishonest at the start. Had she been honest up front, I would have taken the job at a premium....have done several since October.

If you are curious, Ozone Shock treatments work better than the heating method in my experience. The ozone at high enough concentrations displaces the oxygen and anything that breaths, dies....blood suckers included.

I have a pretty strong ozone machine,   cant remember the rating.

Part of it was her pause and then the way she sounded on the phone when she was trying to convince me there was no bugs in her place.

I want no part of anything that has to do with bed bugs,   once you reach infestation levels its no laughing matter.        The biggest risk is you take a mother home on your clothes doing a job like this.

Also I just feel like this isnt the type of work I want to get into and we just arent trained or prepared to deal with this,    if she was not being completely honest.

The first company that failed on the persons house I know for $6k only did heat treatments and fogged the house,   cleaned all surfaces etc.

Orkin came in with full PPE gear and removed every item from the home that was porous and either destroyed it or placed it in a heat tent,      bombed the whole property,     fogged all ducts/vents,     treated the carpets,   and convinced them to throw away a good amount of the furniture. Place looked like a crime scene clean up.       $10K and it worked.

If I came in as a carpet cleaner for $250 and somehow some way transferred those nasty things to my house or a customers house I would feel like a moron

went into a nasty house in an upscale neighborhood about 4 yrs ago,      dog urine everywhere and during inspection while we were getting ready to start a bed bug jumped on my employees face...

big nasty flea looking thing with a big fat swollen butt

I told him were getting the f out of here now,   put the hoses in the truck

id be real careful doing those jobs Rob, could easily end up a nightmare... those things are not like dog fleas

I know your experienced with a lot of specialty cleaning like mold etc, but man if you brought those things into your home it would really suck

Like Orkin, I go in fully suited and everything I wear is removed and sealed away when I leave....same as any crime scene / hazmat jobs. I have no desire to bring my work home with me.

I am surprised that Orkin sprayed at all since there really isn't a pesticide that works on bed bugs since DDT was banned in this country. Makes me wonder what they were spraying. scratch

Since we are in the business that we are, the odds are that you will run into a place that has these vermin at some point. My advice would be buy the local pest control guys lunch and let him tell you the ins / outs of bed bugs, fleas, etc.

Like us, they like to talk and will tell you all kinds of valuable things. Then you will be ready for that day when some dishonest customer drags you into their bed bug mess. Making the right decisions after being exposed can save you a lot of pain and money.

That is how I got educated, a 35 year Orkin guy over a BLT lunch. Probably the best $8 I ever spent and there was no iicrc test at the end. cheers

Isn't it funny how you can tell when people are hiding stuff. The last situation I had like that she said the bugs were only in one room. I declined and I would have done the same thing on this one,

Critters are always an issue aren't they?

I was just reading up on the Zika Virus spreading to Hawaii. Before that, it was fire worms in Iowa, and the list goes on and on.

Run!
I have a friend, experienced in CC; tried to bring him aboard until he got a much better paying job with a pest control Co. We specifically had a discussion about bed bugs, roaches, lice....
He told me; DONT do it. Let someone else take care of it. At any price!
Having cleaned carpets and now doing pest control; he would pass.

Haven't checked the other forums in a long time.

I recall years ago on the PCN a couple of guys offering pest control as another service option  and they did pretty well with it. In my town the pest control guys are busy as heck in the summer time when the critters come out.

I think in AZ you have to work or someone else for a couple of years before you can get your license and break out on your own

I did it for awhile here. You have to get a license which requires you attend a class and pass the chemistry exam for most applications. It is all by category around here with the easiest rating for farmers in order to apply pesticides on their farms.

I only held a license for exterior spraying of buildings after many of the rural customers that had retired from farming needed someone who could spray for may flies, crickets, and mice. It was an easy service add-on back then.

I usually tell the customers that the cleaning would be useless and they would be wasting their $$ paying us and later on have to have the carpets cleaned again after pest control is done with the treatments, most actually thanked me for that advice, it avoids confrontation.

The dry heaves looked real to me.....so did that last second nervousness before opening the valve.

It did work, but I think it was real and he is trying to cover up the stupidity. After-all, didn't the city threaten to fine him for illegal dumping? Saying it was actually clean water with a little potting soil mixed in might get you out of a fine.
