One of the biggest thing for any cleaner to learn is that they are not really a cleaner. Your mechanic is not really a mechanic and your plumber is not a plumber.

Okay, so now you are thinking that I lost my mind, but my point is that every single business is really a marketing business and only differs in what services are being marketed.

Just like McDonald's is really about marketing a cheeseburger and not about making the best cheeseburger in the World. Say what you want about the quality of the burger, but they are able to market it to the number one position each year in sales.

When most people start out, they focus on the service and not on the marketing, but will need to switch to the marketing side to survive and grow. The trick is to maintain good service quality while growing the marketing plan.

I thought about this a lot lately and realized that I am still too focused on the service quality instead of the marketing, a fact that needs to change in 2016. The fact that there are still some companies out there beating me on bids while providing vastly inferior service is proof that I have fallen behind.

Where are you and your company? Are you a cook trying to make the perfect cheeseburger or are you a salesman who knows how to move a decent burger over your competition?

I think the biggest example of that is Stanley Steamer. The marketing is so good that they actually help the owner Op secure more business.

That is a very good example, Mo.

Where would you place yourself...cook or sales?

Im more in the sales category these days but still have passion for the cooking.

I dont want to be the world beater carpet cleaner because it is a fairly simple service once you figure it out,  as much as I love finding the complicated problems with it and finding solutions to it.

My goal is to have prices on the slightly higher end and provide a service that 95% of customers will be very enthusiastic about,    but not try and compete with the guys that wipe the baseboards etc and also not compete with the guys that grab their ankles and work for beer money

a very repeatable,   easily sold service that makes people happy with honest work and lines my pockets with $$$$$

Currently both, but in the near future I would be interested in trying out some other business opportunity, if I do that, I would be part time salesman and probably work 1 day a week for my repeat customers that only want me to clean their carpets, that means I personally will serve my best clients only.
I like cleaning carpets but I realized that I'm getting older and need to delegate as much things out as possible, with very short leash in the first year to maintain high standard.

That is where I am trying to go as well AC, but I am still leveraged towards the cleaning side of the business with the whole floor show.

Shifting my focus is the new plan.

I'm in sales first, and providing great quality service second, to keep them calling back.

I'm not much of a cook tho. laughing
