Phd in Chemistry means nothing
I just ordered a bunch of both "Procyon" powder and the "Slop and Gobble" powder in hopes that one of them can replace the Extreme Clean that I have been using on commercial jobs. I will be going out and testing each one side-by-side at some point later next week.
Anyway, as I finished the order, I received a call from a new customer who wanted an immediate cleaning due to a bad spill on his new carpet. When I arrived, I noticed a lot of diplomas on the wall and one of them was a PhD in Chemistry.
I started to go back to the truck to dig out the MSDS binder expecting to get the 3rd degree when he stopped me and asked where I was going? I told him and he actually said: "I don't care what you use, just get rid of the stains".
I told him that I might have a jug of battery acid left in the van, otherwise I would just use some commercial prespray. He chuckled at least and then left the room.
I have to say, every time I think that people would flock to the greener chemistry, I run into a guy like this. It makes me wonder if we are the only ones who really care what we are spraying? Maybe they only care about the results and not how we got there?
Oh well, I'm still going to try and find a new mix for commercial...I care at least.

And like how powerful your TM is? Or how a rotovac really...
We care and get excited about our trade. My wife gets glossy eyed when I talk about CC. Just like I zone out when she talks about nursing.

exactlly we are our own worst enemy when it comes to solutions and method. All the clients or customers want is valuable service. When the time comes that your no longer showing value your replaceable.

Re: Phd in Chemistry means nothing
We're the one that are exposed to cleaning solutions day in and day out.
Re: Phd in Chemistry means nothing
But should we care so much about it, even if the customer doesn't?
When a mechanic replaces parts, you just want your car back repaired, but a good mechanic will only use quality parts....even if you don't realize there is a difference, he does.

The customer just wants to hear "yes, I can take care of that".

Re: Phd in Chemistry means nothing
we live in a pretty green area so I do get asked about what we use... mostly in homes with a new baby.
but its true that we are the ones who will have major health side effects from over exposure, not the customer who is barely exposed.
the only actual problems Ive had in the past were with the famous deodorizer everyone was excited about, that got me into trouble on more jobs than I care to remember.
really offensive smells definitely will piss off some customers

I'm wondering what deodorizer that was?
Do you not want to post the name here, and if so why not, if it's so bad?........I can't imagine anything worse than UltraFresh, that we used in the late 80s to mid 90's, or until it killed the guy that was spraying it!
I'd say about 25% of my new customers either call me, rather than the next guy and/or question me about what I use because they're usually concerned for their family, pet's, kid's, or the environment........but that also has a lot to do with my business name, and description of how I clean, I know because prior to that green change, it was hardly ever a question. The good thing about now, is many people are calling me and not even ever considering anyone else because of the green factor...........but of course they're many that could care less, and just looking for the lowest price. Those I refer to the 'next guy'!

Oh gawd do I remember the ultrafresh.....horrible stuff. There used to be one that smelled like you spilled a jug of Brute, but I forget the name of it....probably due to breathing it.

I've had that kind of customer, well may be minus the Ph.D. In chemistry, but yeah their priority is the stains to be gone and usually those types are amazingly annoying, even though you told them that you can't guarantee the stains to come out, they always over react of disappointments, I hate that.

I cleaned for a retired Geoligist. He used his rare rock collection as door stops
