Teflon Tape Empty Teflon Tape

Post by milspec6 Wed Oct 21, 2015 4:01 pm

I learned something new today about teflon tape. I might be the slow one in the crowd, but some of you might benefit from this lesson if you ate paste in school like me.

For decades, I have chosen to use the white teflon tape on all my fittings. It is cheap and lends to a clean installation as opposed to the pastes which I normally end up getting all over the place. I also tend to over-do it by wrapping the threads about 6-7 times before assembly.

Today, I learned 2 things actually:

1. The PTFE (teflon) paste will actually allow you to get a tighter seal by lubricating the threads on the pipe. The more threads that you can screw in the better seal and the paste helps with that. Of course, I still would end up wearing it when I was done, so I prefer the tape. Which leads to observation number two.

2. The yellow teflon tape that you will find in the hardware store right next to the white tape is rated for gas fittings. Well, guess what, that yellow teflon tape is thicker and contains 3x the amount of teflon that you find in the white stuff. In other words, it will not shred, shrink, or bind up as much as the white tape and will require less wraps to get a good seal.

So, if you are like me and prefer the teflon tape for all your pipe threads, do yourself a big favor and skip the white reel next time and grab the yellow teflon tape. The results are really worth it.

Good tip........

Although I've noticed the same thing about the yellow gas ver. of the tape I haven't really used it that much for TM fittings. Maybe it's time I make the switch.

And I just like you, don't care for the paste due to the mess.

Thanks, Rob!! wink

HD is now selling the thicker grey stuff, I started using it, Oatey makes it. They had it on sale when it debuted. The only thing I will use now. 3 -4 times as thick. Done with the Harbour Freight Teflon tape- 10 rolls for $3, if they really wanted to screw you they would give you 20 rolls for $3.00, lol.

Hey guys just wanted to update this thread. The thread tape that I have is for  gas lines. it's it is PTFE thread tape seal and it has a temperature range -450 - 500 degrees Fahrenheit. It's full density only need 3 wraps instead of 5 or 6 of the cheaper stuff.

Interesting, i have never used the yellow gas tape but will look into it thank you for the tip. What i have been using is pipe dope just brush it on the threads and your done. I hated the white tape shredding.

Yellow stuff doesn't shred. Less messy than the pipe dope as well.
