Technology
I just ordered a new desktop for my home studio. It has more power than I should ever allow in my cave, but it was a great deal. I was planning on using it as a stand-alone system to prevent any conflicts and just like that, my current laptop is starting to suffer crashes. It has happened twice this week already.
So, realizing that I haven't done any backing up in probably 6 months, I bought an external drive and saved everything. You know that you are not a tech guy when all your saved documents, media, etc. could have been saved to a thumb drive.
Now I need to decide if I will use my new system for everything or replace my laptop as well? Technology always irritates me....I should have been born in the 1800's.

Should've waited for black Friday in a few weeks where you can save close to 50%, especially desktops, I got a crazy deal 2 years ago on one including top of the line screen for $ 500 ( 6 gb memory, 2 TB hard drive, i5 processor, forgot the speed ). At that time that system including the monitor was about $ 699 on sale price.
Yes and yes, use one system for everything is my motto, especially you bought an external HD ( even though you realized you shouldn't ), save all pictures and data on external HD and keep your HD as light as possible to speed things up ( assuming it's windows ? )

I am leaning in your direction Dp, it seems like a waste to only use it for recording a few times per month.
I did okay on the deal though. A new Lenovo desktop running i7 @ 3.60 ghz, 12 mb ram, and 256 ssd drive for a little over $400. I still need a monitor for it, but that shouldn't add a lot more to the price tag.
In comparison, my office laptop is still running a Centrino chip, 2 mb ram, and 160 mb storage. I am in for a real shock once I hook it all up.

Most of the T.V's at walmart wok as a monitor too. No need to spend 400+ on a monitor. You can get a 19 or 17 inch TV for maybe 200.
Just be sure they have a USB or HD cable hook up, which most all of the TV's now, do.

Re: Technology
I actually have a $400 gift card to Staples, so I will be using that to source my monitor. I will be rocking after that.
