From snow. 14"ish on ground. 80% tomorrow, 90% wed. Hasn't been above 20° for 10 days or so.
I know, "come to Nebraska, I'll show you winter". No the.
Reminds me of Frank Sinatra singing "let it snow, let it snow....

Around here, a lot of seasonal business also run a snow plow operation in the winter.  I always thought it too risky to invest the money based on Mother Nature, but many do it.

If I had the money, I would buy a Norwegian military track vehicle (minus the weapon) and start being a Winter Uber shuttle for storm periods.  Those vehicles transport troops all over the mountains with ease and hold like 8 people.  I think that could have promise.

It is funny, but I have been considering taking a vacation up into the mountains. I like the snow and cold when I am out hiking. The snow shoes, cross-country skiing, improvised shelters, etc. all sound great to me right now.

The problem is always worrying about what you leave behind. Who is going to take care of the trucks so they don't freeze up? Who will keep the house together and prevent damage if the power goes out? Who will answer the phones and take care of the jobs that may come along?

I find vacations to be more stressful than relaxing as a result of all the worrying. I was so much happier when I lived in an apartment, didn't have much of anything, and worked for someone else. Then, it was so easy to pick up and take off when I wanted. The only thing was, I needed to take those vacations back then to tolerate working for somebody else, living in an apartment, and having nothing.

Just part of life.

Some people do roof snow removal in the winter. I've thought about it, but most houses here are 2 story. I have long poles to do it with, but nothing made long enough to reach the peak of a 2 story from the ground.

Not gonna ladder up in the winter either.

I had also considered doing small snow removal with a snowblower, shovel, and a broadcast spreader with salt.

Around here, they are also mostly early 20th century 2-story homes. Like mine, it is 43 feet just to edge of the roof.  I stopped cleaning my gutters 3 years ago as a result, just didn't like being that high on a ladder these days.

There are seasonal winter jobs, I just don't know if they are worth chasing.  They all depend on the weather and are hard on the body and machinery, so I don't know if there is much of a profit potential.

I used to ride the highways in blizzards with my old jeep to extract motorists that got stranded.  You would be amazed how much people will pay you (and happily) to yank them out of the ditch or take them home.  My best storm, I pulled 4 trucks out of the ditch and shuttled 14 people between the cities of Omaha and Lincoln while the interstate was closed due to drifting.

That jeep had a 4 inch lift and 33 inch tires. but the drifts were still half way up my radiator.  It took awhile to make each trip, but it was fun and I pocketed $3000 that day.

I really miss that Jeep.

You read correctly....I even turned down some money that night. It did cost me a broken transmission line, but it was worth it.

Actually Matt, now that we survived the inch of ice outside (my gutters are still a solid block though) we had 53 degrees and Sunshine today. Looks like good weather in the 40's all week.

The river and creeks are really high as a result. Farmers should be pleased.
