Propane News

Post by milspec6 on Fri Jan 20, 2017 12:56 pm

I got some good news today, I found a propane source local for my box truck. I spoke to several suppliers in this area and they told me that the insurance companies have killed their ability to fill DOT tanks due to their pumps being too high of pressure and the risk of over-filling rapidly. That left me at the mercy of U-Haul 47 miles away and I have a ton of work over the next 4 days to do so a back up truck is vital.

Well, the salesman at on location was able to suggest an alternative. We have a lumber yard in this area that is pretty large and uses about a dozen of forklifts in their daily operation. They have a low psi pump on their property to just fill their fleet. It took a little extra cash, but it looks like they will refill my tank as long as I don't take too much. They said anything over 45 gallons per week and they would not support the deal. I should be well under that usage.

Now, as long as the heater functions and that weld holds....I am in business. Wine

Filled up today.....just under $2 per gallon. A whole lot better than the $3.25 over 40 miles away.

The only negative is they close at 4 and don't open on the weekends, so I do have to pick my spots.

Maybe you start a side business, propane fill station. Find others in the same boat as you. Get a large tank with pump.
I know, like you would have time to offer see that.⛽

That's not too bad of an idea Matt, your operating hours can be after the other guy closes and weekends, that way you'll rack up all of those late birds cheers

That could work, but I am getting the feeling that the insurance side of the business would be outrageous and complex as to storage and dispensing.

Not to mention code, permits, location. Cuz you neighbors will nix anything onsite at your place.
Just the insurance alone will demand that you charge $3gl to pay for coverage.
