I had a house scheduled this morning that belonged to the Bank President that holds the paper on my vehicle loan. As I was setting up, I kept seeing the owner driving up and down the street. I sat down with the wife and we went over her expectations and any concerns that she had. I always do this so we are on the same page and it always nets some additional information that they failed to disclose over the phone....in this case it was that the carpet was corn-based fibers and that they had a really bad experience with previous cleaners.

She had 2 dogs (a lab and little yapper), but told me that they never had any problems with them "going" in the house. Ten minutes later with the UV light, it looked more like a crime scene...she seemed shocked, but I wasn't. The rooms had little baby gates to keep the dogs out, but how is a 14 inch tall fence going to keep a Lab out of the room?

Anyway, she told me that the previous cleaner has always used an "orange smelling spray" that left the carpet gritty feeling and wet for 2 days. Oh and she wanted to know what I charged for the stain protector as "the last guy was pretty expensive" she said. Mad Mad

I had to explain to her about that corn-based fiber and how everything that she just described is precisely how NOT to clean this kind of carpet. Anyway, I went back to the truck to fire up the TM and in pulls the husband (Bank Pres. along with the Commercial Loan Manager) to pick up something he forgot. It felt like a set-up, but it made me laugh more than anything. Razz

Well, 2.5 hours later, house was done and I pulled enough dog hair out to make a softball. We talked for another 30 minutes while I moved all the air movers around to dry things up and she seemed really pleased....asked for a stack of business cards. Peace

It sure felt like an audition which I think that I passed. The downside to this will be a steady diet of that crappy corn-based carpet. Your wand sure glides along it like silk, but claims that it is stain proof is sure BS and you sure don't want to use anything harsh on it or it will smell like a corn field in there (made that mistake 2 years ago).

It was the only job scheduled today and we have a hail storm setting up, so I am calling it a day.

They probably will Matt, just give them a little time.

She made it easy, seemed really interested in the process and details or maybe just angry over the previous cleanings. Either way, it should help me in the end.

How can you identify a corn based carpet? I don't think I've ever seen one.

There are several brand names for it, but I realize it by one of 2 things. One, they use a plastic backing to hold the polymer fibers that you can see if you part the tufts. Two, they tend to smell like a cornfield when you hit them with hot water.

They claim that they are extremely stain resistant due to the fibers not absorbing water, but things like pet urine if left unchecked too long cause the plastic backing to deteriorate and the tufts to separate. They forget to mention that to customers with pets....I am quick to educate them on it.

You also have to be careful how you clean them. They like to tell buyers to only use water, but you try and clean urine with only water. I have never found them cleaning up well with just water and use Procyon as a conditioner. They do clean up well then and man does a glided wand fly across the floor on that stuff.
