Going back to school
I have to finish up a flood job tomorrow re-installing the carpet and baseboards since I haven't been able to locate an installer willing to do a single bedroom job. It isn't my first time doing it, but I am not real experienced either.
I did locate a former installer / repair guy who still does some work for a local real estate agent who happens to live a few blocks away from the job-site. I made him 2 offers today:
1. Re-install and stretch this carpet.
2. Take me along on jobs and teach me the craft in exchange for free labor.
It sounds like this guy is a good craftsman with 42 years experience in carpet repair and installations. He is retired and sure could offer better training than what I could receive at a 2-day iicrc class. I am really hoping he takes me up on my offer (both of them actually).
I did that for my stone installation / repair experience and it was a great week. I wish I could of had a few more weeks with that guy actually, but he gave me a pretty good base to work from.

Re: Going back to school
Looks like I found my teacher. He will be on-site tomorrow to install the new carpet and will be showing me the ropes next week.
Carpet Repair / Installation 101 will begin.

Re: Going back to school
Do you have carpet stretcher yet ? I bought a used one a couple of years ago and first job already paid it off, but after that I only used it like 3 times, I mainly bought it because once in a while there is a nut job that wants one company to clean and stretch and even though I have a buddy that does stretching, they just don't want to go through the hassle of scheduling 2 companies, which is understandable, but I also offer to schedule the job for them at the same time ( stretching will be done first of course ) and they still say no, so I end up with that huge stretcher in my garage that's hardly being used.
Honestly stretching is not that difficult. The problem is I'm kind a perfectionist so when I cut the carpets, it took me a while cause I don't want to over cut or under cut and I also want my cut to be super straight, that's the only time consuming part for me on stretching.

I don't yet, but there are always some for sale locally and on fleabay. I have an assortment of kickers, tuck tools, rollers, etc., but no stretcher.
I decided to wait to get this guy's opinion on which one to get. I am also pretty OCD about things and will likely be a perfectionist with this service as well.

That's a dying craft with all the free him depot installations going around.
I.met a handyman a couple of months back that gave me a referral for one. I had just stopped referring guys cause they would just disappear and not return my customers calls and in turn made me look like an ass

This guy was a surprise in all ways. Despite all those years of experience, he was my age...been installing since he was 7 years old with his Father.
We made a good team today and he was incredibly efficient. I think it will work out.
