What a ride

Post by milspec6 on Fri Apr 06, 2018 10:45 pm

I am sitting here looking out at the thermometer in my trucks as the weather turned nasty at the end of the week. It was below freezing all Friday (with snow) and currently 11 degrees with continued cold temperatures forecasted all the way through Monday. Then, starting Tuesday.....sunny and low 70's for the rest of the week!!! Only in Nebraska does such crap happen. Mad

I am pushing the ads hard this weekend in hopes that the 70's spark a good rush of cleanings to be scheduled. Coming out of a deep freeze, those low 70's will feel darn right tropical in comparison. There should be some needed buzz when that happens and with some new chemicals to try out along with some tool changes, I am excited for the first time since October. I just it happens and I don't end up a bust for another week.

Bring on the Sun!

Here's to wishing you success and a full schedule.

We get two days of high 50's low 60's this week. It's getting really close for me. I had one bid a couple of weeks ago, but I knew I would not land that one. They got at least two bids, but so far I don't see the work done. I bet it was more money then they wanted to spend.

Funny thing is, people will go out and make payments on a 300 dollar TV, but act like services should cost beer money. Lol. Everyone seems to be buying on credit, rather than having the money to pay for stuff. Maybe I should offer to finance cleanings? Lol. I'm joking, but I'm sure there is a market for that!

Heck, maybe that's your "in" for your market Rob! Sell them clean on payments! For only 29.99 a month, you'll clean their carpets twice a year. Lol. Very Happy

I was discussing the market last night at a social function. There was piano tuner in attendence who told me that five years ago there was no market for it so he was working full-time in a warehouse, but then it exploded and he can't keep up with the demand now. Carpet cleaning I think is a dying service because people do not entertain at their homes anymore. Hell, most people don't even leave their houses anymore except for work. Unless there are infants or pets at the house, there is no desire to clean for most people.

I think that will be the new approach...mostly commercial while targetting first time parents and pet owners. Everything else is a dead market. I did pick up a duplex that needs cleaned thanks to the piano tuner so the event wasn't a complete waste of time.

Just excited to see that this week brings!!

They're scrap hoses that I was using to dump the waste tank last winter. They normally hang up insdie the garage, but I got caught in a heavy snow after one job and they were frozen to the ground from that day onward. I have to clean them up tomorrow with the nice weather and see if they are still serviceable.

Lord knows it is the only thing that I have to clean up right now. I have never seen such a dead start to an April in 12 years. The only thing advertising has done for me is increase my robo callers...I am up to 15 per day now!

That's how it was for me too Mo. We had 70's from Tuesday on through Friday and only 2 jobs. Seems like this industry just died.

This is interesting. Maybe we should have a poll to see what the market perceptions are for other cleaners.

The vast majority of my carpet cleaning revenue is from commercial with a few residential move outs or home listings and just two residentials that I can recall over the last 2 years. I might be an outlier though because I do much more window cleaning than carpet cleaning.

Until 2 years ago, I was almost 100% commercial so I wasn't aware of the market for residential either. I thought it was just this area, but I am hearing reports all over the country of residential cleaning volume being way down. The only spikes I've seen is for the holidays when there will be entertaining, but that is all.

I spent some time speaking with local business in my area and they are all complaining about how slow things have been so far this year so maybe it isn't just me. That raises the question as to what the issue is since the economy is good, unemployment is low and yet nobody is speding any money.

I did called for an emergency clean which I took. I wasn't a very good ticket, but it was work. I would have turned down the job in the past, but it was more for psychological reasons rather than financial. It just feels so much better to be working.

I do have one small house Wed. and a larger one on Thursday so this week at least did something, but we are still stuck in the upper 40's with more snow forecasted on Wed., so nobody is thinking Spring around here.

Down here, we are in a big fight over giant chicken farms coming into the area. Costco is opening the largest chicken production facility in the US in this area and paying farmers to allow giant coupes to be built on their property at $50,000 per year per building. This is an agricultural area, but most of the houses are not farmers, just wealthy folks moving away from Omaha for a quieter life with nice views of agricultural land. Now they will have millions of chickens next door, lots of truck traffic, stench, etc. and they are not happy about it. I don't blame either one in this fight personally. I think there will be some built North of me about 7 miles away, but that is life.

That is a losing fight in so many ways for home owners close to the chicken farms.
We had a new large dairy go in, out in the country. Local people fought it for years. But when government is behind the big money- screw the home owners.
I've done a few jobs down wind. One old guy says, you kind of get use to it. I didn't believe him one bit.
+ who in their right mind would buy close to a dairy farm??? No one!!!!

Re: What a ride

That is really the issue, money. The County stands to gain a lot in tax revenue so they want it to happen. Costco is greasing the wheels heavily as they stand to make a fortune as well. The farmers willing to have the buildings built on their land get $50k each year per building, so they like it. The only ones that hate it are the home owners in the rural areas that will see property values drop to nothing if they are located near by.

Everyone has a very valid reason for their position, but there can only be one winner and the home owners will not be the one. Last check, they will be about 6 miles to the North of me. My town was voted "Best place to raise a family" in Forbes not long ago, but that might change depending on how much the wind affects us. Time will tell.

Another way to see it is, everyone wants to eat, but no one anymore is self sustaining growing their own food.

Lots of people think food comes from the grocery store, and have no idea how it got there.

If everyone wants to eat, it has to be produced SOMEWHERE.

So true, it has to be produced somewhere, but everyone wants it to be someplace other than their backyard. Just the way people are these days.
