What's the difference between a bonnet and a pad? Is the type of machine you put under it?

I consider a pad to be anything that scrubs, like a buffing pad. I consider a bonnet to be something that can extract soil and moisture.

Id kind of a loose term. I have called bonnets both pads and bonnets but to be technical I think I would agree with Realclean.

A pad extract/absorbs soiling too. Maybe not as much as a bonnet.

Not really. They are adsorbent. Mostly recycled plastics. You can push dirt up into the pores of the pad but its not really absorbing anything.
