I have always been a Tuthill guy, so I am looking for some thoughts on the Root model.

1. Best oil for a Roots 45 Dual Splash blower?
2. Best ISO for winter usage?

Looking up the specs, I see the recommendations of an ISO 220 for most temperatures (below 90 degrees) and ISO 150 for ambient temps below freezing. It never mattered with the Butler as I just close the doors when it is below freezing, but that is not the case with the TNT.

I can't find any Roots branded oil in my area (interlink, locals, grainger, etc.) so what are the good options or is there a recommended source for the Roots brand.....or does it really matter which brand as long as it meets the ISO rating?

I should remain above freezing for the remainder of this month, but we did hit 32 once over-night so it will not be far off. If I run this unit over the next 4 months, it will be at below 32 degree temps, so is it best to make the change to ISO 150?

I personally use Aeon PD, but I heard that the viscosity specs of Gardner Denver vs Tuthill and Roots are different, so I really don’t know, plus you also have to deal with harsh winter, which I don’t know anything about, so I’m sorry not much help coming from me.

I never know how much difference their really is beyond the builders demanding their own stuff for warranty purposes. Some claim that their mix is made special for their seals, but I think that is really just BS.

I would think that any synthetic that met the ISO requirement would do the job, but I am not an expert either. Nor have I ever heard anyone using anything lighter like the ISO 150 in the winter.

I just don't like answering my own questions since I am a functional idiot.

Now that was interesting, I didn't know how they converted. At the cost of the Roots branded plus shipping, I could really save a lot by buying local.

I can find Aeon 40 miles away, but it is still far more expensive than any product by Mobil or Super Lube which I can purchase down the street. If it is safe to do so, that would be my preference.

Doing some more research was interesting. The Roots Blower oil is manufactured by Royal Purple which I have access to one of their distributors local. I should be able to get this done local sourced.

I am also changing it out to the ISO 150 as the temps dip down.

The other interesting thing is that I normally change the oil in my Butler blower (Tuthill) every Spring and Fall. Reading a bulletin from Roots, they state the synthetic oil has a service life of 4,000 - 8,000 hours! That is pretty much the life of the machine, so maybe the oil changes have been a waste of money?

I had some oil blended to meet the aeon PD Xd spec that I use in everything now. My local garner Denver dealer got it made for me. It was so expensive for the aeon, I had a case made. Aeon PD XD my cost $38.00 per qt no margin for markup. The oil I have is $28.00 per qt so $10.00 a qt and I make a couple dollars. Just not paying for the Aeon name.
Also use the Comet brand pump oil, it meets General pump spec and exceeds cat pump spec. So this is what I have been using across the board.

Gear oil selection would be 90w for just about every temp. I have never been a fan of the smell though.

"..Roots, they state the synthetic oil has a service life of 4,000 - 8,000 hours"

-My wife gets free oil changes for life with her van. Lately, they've been putting a sticker for the next change, at "5000miles".
-i went and got the oil changes in our back up car. They ask is I want a 5000 mile or 7500 mile oil change reminder???
When did the recommendation go from "3 months or 3000 miles"???

Oil for a Roots 45 Blower Empty Re: Oil for a Roots 45 Blower

I had this same conversation with my mechanic a few years ago. The synthetics are really good these days and with a quality filter, the changes have been extended greatly.

The problem is that if you take your car to a mechanic, he doesn't just change the oil. He checks over the car at the same time for issues with the tires, brakes, belts, hoses, leaks, coolant rating, fluid levels, etc. By extending the change interval from about 3 months to 6-8 months, there is a greater likelihood of a problem developing that could have been avoided with earlier detection.

Think of it like a dental check-up, if you only go for a checkup every 2 years due to superior toothpaste, the odds of late detection is likely.

I still change the oil in my Butler van every month and the box truck every 3 months regardless of mileage. Costly, but it gives me piece of mind and helps ward of problems later.

For all you non-winter folks looking for options, I found this at Grainger local.  Not much cheaper than Aeon by quart, but might be easier to find.

The only problem for me is that the temperature range is listed in the spec sheet as 41 - 122 degrees ambient.  In a van, that would be fine, but around here in the great wide open it will not cut it.

$ 27 is a lot cheaper than $ 40 for Aeon, but I don’t think I’m willing to take a chance on saving $ 13 against my $ 5000 blower, lol.
Although it is MOBIL and I love MOBIL one oil, may be, just may be Razz
Thanks for the link Bob.

Wow, I didn't know the Aeon cost you that much out there. I ended up ordering some oil from Roots at $27 per quart.

If you go to Mobil 1's website it asks you to input the brand of equipment you are operating and that was the lubricant that came up for Roots and Tuthill. I didn't search any others, but the specs look like a match for the Aeon.

Might be worth giving the Mobil 1 tech line a call for more details and compare them side by side.

Iso 220 , that is the aeon PD Xd equivalent. That is the iso rating of the oil I had blended and use. But if you are not running a Everest unit. You can run a lower ISO 150. I don't know what the price difference is. But iISO 220 MEETS and exceeds the requirements ISO 150.
