Bad start to the day
So I lite my LG and walk around the van and see a flame shooting up in the air. So I ran over and shut off the valve on the tank. After that I was only able to start the pilot but once I let go of the starter it went out. So cold water extraction all day. So I increased the agitation and chems. Used the 360 on most of the work today.
I guess there is some safety feature that stops for relighting after and event like that. I guess I'm gonna have to buy another control box.

Yeah, my second thought was no way imma let this type of equipment be in the hands of an employee. Kinda scary! I have always worried about this happening.
It was from the union fitting working lose.

Re: Bad start to the day
I have always been a hx guy because of stories like this...kind of scares me to think that my van could become a roman candle, but there are other things that can cause a fire as well on any van.
During the summer months, hx units are great...simple and still give you 180 - 190 at the wand all day long. It is just in the winter when you have to fight to hold 160 degrees that it kind of sucks.

Re: Bad start to the day
I think the employee thing and fuel fired is the only down fall to not having a HX
Re: Bad start to the day
Some days I think you really need both connected to the machine so that you can select the heat method on the fly.
I suppose you could run a hx with a LG inline and then just decide which one you want supporting the machine. I know many do, just wish there was the one perfect method to save space and efficiency....like a heat exchanger with a burner assembly in one single unit. They both use copper coils, so it seems doable.

Got a cigar? Lol
Hector is on vacation this week so I had a back up. I do know I can call on when I need some help for sure. Thx Eric.
I'm gonna order a new control panel tomorrow from LG $125.

Re: Bad start to the day
Ive heard stories about LG heaters causing fires but I just dont see how that could happen, maybe the newer models are different
I would have to have a loose paper or shoe cover or something get under the unit and catch fire, I dont see how else it could happen they are pretty damn safe. As safe as any natural gas water heater in your house

Had a union break lose. Leaked LP make fire. I guess you can blame that on me. How? Not sure, but it happened.

Was it a vibration issue that loosened that union? Seems odd that it would happen like that, but you can never trust a union (sorry teamsters).
Re: Bad start to the day
Glad it didn't turn into anything serious Ryan. I've been seriously considering HX those folks at Johns HXers in Florida make them to retrofit the TNT
Re: Bad start to the day
I cleaned the bunker ring about three weeks ago. I did tighten the union pretty good. Guess not enough to losses from vibration. Lesson learned.

Re: Bad start to the day
I found the problem with the 3HT. The thermal coupler was melted (it's copper)when the fire broke out. I called little giant and they sent me a trouble shooting guide and helped determine if it was the control panel or the thermal coupler. I'll get some pictures for ya tomorrow.

Re: Bad start to the day
Probably the thermal coupler...mine was melted when it arrived and that was the advice that LG gave me.
I also don't hear many complaints about the control panel...it is the same Unitrol unit that was on my water heater at the house.

Re: Bad start to the day
When you do this to your LG heater.
Go with your gut, and replace the thermostat and thermal coupler. Don't let the guy on the phone talk you out of the obvious.
Also, I'd like to say Thanks to Ryan Scoggins at Sun Belt USA for meeting me at the store on Sunday when they. are closed. From the beginning Ryan always told me he would do that and I hoped I would never have to do that. Today I needed it desperately and he held to his word. I'm humbly grateful for that.
I'm burning LP now!

Re: Bad start to the day
Oh Geez, did you have flames coming out the bottom that melted that plactic, or what??
Looks really bad, and I'd want to know the cause of that for sure, so it could definitely be fixed preventing that, or worse again!!
Never seen anything like that in my 27 yrs using a LG.

Re: Bad start to the day
The union came lose and leaked LP. It's safe to say operator error. Apparently I didn't tighten that union snug enough after cleaning burner. It took about a month to cause the leak. I'm gonna put that union on the monthly maintenance list.

Yes, it was fully engulfed in flames. Had to turn off at the tank.

Holy crap man, be careful!....so obviously by the melted plastic, that gas leak caused by the loose fitting ignited......dangerous stuff your family doesn't need......check n double check when you're reassembling after burner cleaning.

Re: Bad start to the day
wow im going to get a 4ft extension on my wrench and tighten the shoot out of my union on the #3 I just cleaned
hard to over tighten a union
something I could have easily overlooked myself, with propane anything its a good idea to spray leak test all over everything anytime its connected or re connected

It's a good idea. I tightened mine too, just not good enough. but I guess the bumping and vibrations in the van broke it down.

Re: Bad start to the day
Spooky, but could have been worse.
We used to run M17LDS units in the Marine Corps to decon equipment that ran a fuel heater. When they didn't ignite right away due to various reasons, the fuel would puddle in the heater tank around the coils.
Then it might light up and you had a ticking bomb on your hands. If you were lucky the psi relief would open, but they were often painted shut.....the tank would blow and quench.
There is always a risk, just have to careful.
