Not sure about other states but that's normal here in AZ and I don't blame her, someone got killed at a subway years ago.

cant open carry in king county, seattle city limits, or most surrounding cities. Out in the rural counties you can

Use to carry rifle, in my buckaroo days up north (Idaho) but now(Cal.) I don't even carry my buck knife until I'm in my home place.(Idaho)

Some areas are tough...depends on the Sheriff and Police Chiefs. One department in my area hates the idea of concealed carry to the point that they make an extra effort to find you in violation so they can pull the permit.
They even arrested a guy that I know for having his hunting knife partially obscured in the back seat (below the sleeping the bag) on a routine traffic stop. Called it a concealed weapon that wasn't declared which was enough to pull his ccw for good.
Most small towns have no problem with open or concealed carry, but you do have to know your audience.
