Post by Devon07 Sun Aug 23, 2015 4:19 pm

Do you guys carry your own medical insurance? Im curious because Im fortunate to have it through my wife and her company. Back when I had the monster company we carried it and offered it to our guys....just curious how much has changed since Obama and the new insurance policies.

I'm on my wife's insurance to Rob. We checked the exchange but there was no savings for us.

Post by milspec6 Sun Aug 23, 2015 8:36 pm

That is the primary reason I still keep the day job. I priced Blue Cross about 6 months ago and boy has it ever changed since Obama-care.

They would only offer a choice of 4 plans and 3 out of 4 carried deductibles over 5k each. They only offered one plan with a sub-$1500 deductible.

At my day job, it is only a $500 deductible along with long-term injury, dental, disability, dismemberment, etc. for less than $40 more per month.

It is pretty scary out there on your own these days....especially when you are built with bailing wire and bubble gum.

We have BCBS and Delta dental and vision is pretty good too....we dont pay anything at all for ours.....well, my wife gets it free and its just a $100 a month for me and my son added. (so, nothing really)

Rob...if you only knew how much metal is in my body.....I have a total of 4feet 5 inches of scars on this body....the very fact I measured says a lot. I have 16 or 18 screws and two plates in my right arm....ive had a two level 360 lower back fusion that had me in ICU for nine days when they hit an artery in surgery ...lots of hardware there....ive had my rt knee scoped three times with the most recent being 3 months ago.....Im like a machine....cleaning is my medicine for my OCD.

What Medical Insurance? Empty Re: What Medical Insurance?

Post by milspec6 Sun Aug 23, 2015 9:59 pm

HAHAHAH....me too brother, lets cover the stats:

Broke my neck in 2 places which left me paralyzed on my left side for weeks...that took 2-3 inch metal plates and 24 screws.

Six inch rod in my right forearm from a 2-handed sledge hammer strike.

Eight titanium clamps in my torso from where they removed my gall bladder, part of my liver, some intestine, and some of my stomach.

Scoped both knees for a total of 5 times...luckily the last one was over 10 years ago although I do have a torn meniscus in my left now as we speak.

Still have a piece of metal in my arm from being stabbed and the tip broke off in the bone...kept it for sentimental reasons (long story).

That's all for the metal, but factor in the 6 deaths, shooting, stabbing with an ice pick, 4 broken ribs in a motorcycle accident, Scarlet fever, exposure to nerve and blister agents, and numerous broken fingers and I think you will get the idea.

I think I just need to marry someone with a good insurance policy. Maybe move next to a hospital as well.

Currently, No insurance here I'm embarrassed to admit......but thanks for the reminder, I need to get it.

I wish I could compete with you guys on all the Ti plates and screws in your bodies, but I can't, guess I've been really lucky after riding/racing motorcycles over half my life (a lot of times at 80 to 160 mph). I have been injured several times, but I think the worst I ever had was a broken ankle, riding a skate board on a half pipe when I was younger.

You are very lucky or just smarter Davey, I would gladly trade places.

Even a very high deductible will keep you from losing everything if something was to ever happen. I don't like doctors much, but I can't seem to avoid them, so I hold onto the insurance very tightly.

I cut my finger yesterday and had to use a bandaid Very Happy

Hey Devon, I can just picture the airport security guys face when you pass the metal detector  affraid

Rob, I've had a torn meniscus on my left knee for a while too and thats my good knee.

The last time I had minor surgery on my toe I think I got some sort of infection. Out of the blue my lip would start getting inflamed looked like somebody punched me in the lip. It always happened at the wrong time too, It was embarrassing.

You guys are getting a great deal on medical. We're paying 600 a month with a 1000 deductible.

DAVEY! you better get insurance! I know its hard but you are at the point (48 yrs old) where its critical to have. man....get it done.

Im having to drop $6k today for product liability insurance on my product. lol its a comfort AFTER its done. Insurance sucks but does give some peace.

I didnt mention all my issues Rob but Im now 100% convinced we are either related or we were in the same damn wreck! I have a Thorasic injury that no doctor wants to touch....the last dr said it involves removing ribs, collapsing a lung, moving my heart just to maybe fix it. Im not even wanting to do it but I live with an intense pain. I should have been dead and lived through two close calls. so, I just move forward and have no fear.

Mo....airport security alway has pulled me aside anyway....I have a brother and dad who paved that road for me. When I do go through the security thing before I get yanked aside its funny to see them look at me like Im a freak. with my bro and dads past ....they see me and get real defensive, like ive been down a crazy road. lol Im just a darn carpet cleaner.

That's the right attitude Devon.

There was a comedian by the name of Robert Schimmel who sadly died of cancer, but he lived by the advice his Father-in-law (survived pow camp in WW2).

That advice came from a guard escorting the prisoners on a forced relocation to another camp where if you fell out, they would shoot you.

"If you want to live, you have to just keep moving forward"

That is pretty much the approach, just keep moving forward. Besides, as we just proved, everyone has something that they deal with on a daily basis and there are always people who have it worse than we do.

Still moving forward.

Pain is weakness leaving your body. Wink

I manage to do ALL my own stunts, I dont drink or do drugs....this was all done with a very straight mind.

Rob....do you take any meds? I have my Drs offer me scripts all the time but I dont take anything but Ibuprofen 800mg as needed. They think my pain level is less than it is but its not....pain meds dont work for me and I dont like them....I hold my pain well. I wish there was something I could take sometimes. Hot showers and a Ibuprofen gets me by.

The only meds I take are glaucoma drops, the rest is just some tylenol as needed.

I don't like medications any more than I like hospitals. When they gutted me, I forced them to discharge me the next day. They refused to unless I had pain under control and could keep food down. I ate 2 eggs, smiled, and did 20 push-ups....funny part was the discharge was signed by the attending physician who turned out to be a DDS!!

I will admit to nearly collapsing after the elevator door closed and those eggs went flying when I reached the car. I slept for 17 hours once home.

I'm an idiot, but a stubborn one. Besides, I was able to rest up far better in my own bed than in a hospital that kept waking me up every couple of hours to check on me.

Not sure being discharged from surgery by a Dental surgeon was a good thing, but I finished the Marine Corps Marathon 4 weeks later...personal best time too. Wink
