I've always used PH Paper when I want to test PH.

But I'm sure an electronic tester is way more accurate...........I've just never used one.

I use these

http://www.gemplers.com/product/G71500/Extech-ExStik-pH-Pen

They are very good pens, but you do have to calibrate them a lot which makes all digital ph meters a bit of a pita and a bit impractical.

I still use it, but mostly on fine upholstery these days. I used to test the carpets to evaluate the ph needed to clean the job and to verify my end result, but it really was over-thinking it.

It does look really professional though and has that value if you want it. I just didn't find it very practical nor overly useful in most situations.

I was more interested for when it comes to wool, It would be handy in other applications as well. How do they calibrate Rob?...the one you show says push button calibration....you have to clean the probe or something?

There is a calibration solution and a sponge applicator. Not a huge issue and if just for wool jobs...not a problem.

get the milwaulkee,     Ive used pH meters for years in gardening.

the liquid in pH probes goes bad over time,    some only last a year or if the meter has been on the shelf for a long time it may go bad in a few months.

Milwaulkee is the only brand that will send you a new probe no questions asked.  (new probes are usually $150 on a $200 meter)     Ill look up the model number.       Ive used about 25 different meters in the 150-750$   range and these are by far the best.

The $40 pens are okay but not very accurate, maybe good enough for carpet cleaning but not gardening.

When you have to constantly recalibrate that is a sign the probe is bad,    and likely even re calibrating your not getting an accurate reading.

I used to use a pen. Mostly for putting on a show however. I had a special little brief case. Ph pen, lighted microscope, formic acid, Ph paper, etc. etc. When I put on a show I almost always got the job. Rocking Chair

heres a link Devon.       best meter out there.    I think milwaulkee doesnt know that pH probes have a shelf life.      Probes usually are accurate for about 1-2yrs but can be less or more.      Ph reading will start to creep up or down and wont settle on one,    or they go out of calibration often.

ive only used it a few times for carpet cleaning, just when I was working on making a protector and making my own rinse.

Nice price on that ph tester AC, it looks like a good buy.

I don't use them very often, but they are handy to have. Testing the ph on textiles isn't a very accurate deal anyway, so you don't have to get crazy on the tools.

Testing solutions, cleaning water, etc. has more applications and accuracy.

that meter will also give you ppm,    so you can see how hard your water is or if your softener is working like it should
