Hey, can you spot me $20
Let's talk this topic over some. How would you handle the spot me boss question. Let make a policy we all can implement in our business.
Let's start with your answer to this question then let's create a positive policy that is a win/win if it's possible.
Our current policy is no we don't get involved advances or loans.

I do not and would not provide advances nor loans to an employee. I think that once you do that, you alter the boss - employee relationship. A kid may hit his Dad up for a $20, but not the employer.
If the employee needs some financial help and I can do so by having him/her do some extra work, that I would be in favor of. Responsibility is something that I take seriously, so I would expect the same from any employees.

I agreed, it's a "no" for me as well, and noone ever asked, however if they do ask, I would give them the benefit of the doubt, may be they forgot their wallet and need lunch money ? It doesn't apply to me though because whoever work with me gets free lunch, I'm paying for their lunch
And before you tell me how nice I am, I have to say it's not always easy working with me, I need them to be very very efficient on the job site, the reward is free lunch, no fast food either, lol.
Another good one is I was asked of this a long time ago, "hey boss, what if the customer asked if we can give them discounts in exchange of tips ?" I almost laugh my butt off, I told him nicely, no, that's not going to be allowed, tips are always optional.

Free lunches?
You definitely aren't hiring any 300 lb Nebraska boys....you would be out of business after the first week.

If your employee doesn't have 20.00 I would be paranoid that they may just help themselves to my customers jewelry.
Thanks to you DP I raised my helpers pay by one dollar an hour. We had a pretty good day yesterday so I gave him a little bonus and he also keeps all tips.
He said that Walmart starts at 10.00/hr now so I couldn't have wally world paying more than me

Good point Mo, broke people can do some desperate things behind your back.
I have 2 "on-call" guys that have been with me for the last 6 years. They each get $20 / hour, plus I provide a cooler of beverages on the job. Dehydration and low blood sugar will slow a job way down and create shoddy work.
I hate thieves, I sure wouldn't encourage an employee to become one.

Re: Hey, can you spot me $20
This reminds me I want to put a mini fridge in the office with some good energy food for fuel.
$20 an hour makes me feel like a chump. Although I put my lead tech on $27000 salary, which was a $3000 raise, his work started to such, along with his behavior, and he put in a notice three months later.
Sometimes you just can't win. Although, I'm glad he is gone. So much better morale these days. Dang it. I'm off topic. My bad.
