Craigslist out side the box…

Ever think, “ah man how can I compete with this bait n switch guy offering $15/room?”

Ever think, “ I just don’t get any calls because Mr Steamer is just to low and everyone is just calling him instead of me”

Ever conclude, “ craigslist is just where the hacks post, and I don’t want any low end price shoppers anyways”

Ever consider instead of chasing the next guys low price to an even lower one?

How about you FLIP the equation completely?

Here are a couple of ways I have found that work!

1.  Have the best looking ad on CL.

2.  Have video testimonials at the top of the ad like these http://greencarpetcleaningspokane.com/testimonials

3.  Use these in your Title along with keywords ① ☃☞ ▀▄

4.  And a HUGE way to weed out cheep folks, have higher potential for upSELLS and to live a longer life…

BE THE MOST EXPENSIVE  !!

Here is another backdoor route!

Create an ad .. something like this :

If you are looking for a contractor, house cleaning company or even just someone to help with the yard work. Here are the legitimate companies with great tract records and are Atlantas GA’s #1 rated in each category.

In looking for the right Company:
1. Make sure their company name is visible in the ad.
2. Also make sure their pricing is available. Makes it easier to find the right company for your budget

3. .Make sure they only have 1 to 2 phone numbers at the most. Any more is unnecessary.

Here is a list of the top companies in Atlanta GA

*****House Cleaning Services*****

Mr Mom’s carpet cleaning 4848484803

Lawn care

GreenSeed lawn care 234344334

Handy man

Example 448484489

Local restaurants

Example 24348490

End..

List clients you personally do business with etc…

Post it with a local picture of your area and make it look like this is an actual business you created.. think of it like your own Angies list. This is just a quick example and can be tweaked to your exact liking's. It’s a win win win!

You can get as creative as you want, for example : Go into future restaurants, retail etc. Tell them you will get them some business if they let you put your business cards in a holder or in a table condiment tray etc and let you put your sticker on the side of the front door in the one of the windows.

Hopefully this sparked some extra blood flowing through your brain!

I am thinking of getting a different van, but the one I have now is not lettered. I am waiting on a quote from a local sign guy for getting the van lettered.
I did my website, and yes, it does need updating. I wrote the ad myself.
I don't have any logo'd shirts (add that to the list of things to get).

I don't know guys, here in LA, I seriously think craigslist shoppers are the lowest of the lowest, I used to do some listings there and the clients I got are always in the gangsters area, how can you upsell when her 6'8" *ummm I better not mentioned any race here, lol* boyfriend is staring at you like he's about to shoot you for trying to charge her $ 15 - $ 25 more per room for pet treatments and such.
I stopped doing the ad cause I seriously enjoy my life and don't wanna get shot or being hustled down by these guys.

Hey sounds like your on track here's the easiest way to create a CL ad..

Go to your wordpress and add a new page.
In that page write out your ad for CL.
Make fonts bigger and have links with company colors etc.
Add Pictures etc.
Then click on the link next to visual that reads "text" and copy that and paste it into your CL body.
That way you have a nice looking ad.

I would ad your location to your ad .. its helps with SEO aka Ranking for the ad..

Do you happen to have a digital copy of an ad you have that you could put in the ad?

Here I just made this up for you, Something like this should work great for you!
If you need more help let me know..

My brother operates off CL and gets high-end clients doing it, but that is in the boating business.  It does prove that all types surf CL, so your approach can be very successful if done right (looks like you have it figured out).

As for my experience, it is more like Dp1's, more negative than positive.  I always got the call that started with "What is your minimum charge" and ended with me cleaning apartments where an extended family of 7 were living in a 2-bedroom apartment.  Of course, I didn't have a great ad either.

What I really don't like about CL is how easy it is for someone (your competition) to flag your ad and then it gets pulled.  I remember trying to sell a few pieces of used equipment a few years ago and the local distributor was getting my ad pulled on a daily basis.

You definately have the marketing mind, though, I am impressed.  Maybe I should follow your lead and jump back in with a better strategy?

How do you place an ad on Craigs List? Do you post it yourself? Do they charge to advertise? Thanks

I wasn't successful at listing my business, but I have sold a few vehicles and purchased stuff off of there many times. What is great is that people who search using "Tempest" will find you from all kinds of areas.

Post yourself once you set up an account password...costs nothing. Just make sure to use a good phone number, many just leave the email address and they never work...well, maybe a few days late they will. I don't believe that you can post in more than one location without being flagged for removal and you may have to repost it every couple of days to keep it in the new listings.

Good luck with it, I might have to take the advice and try it again as well.

There are companies that charge to put ads on for you. They usually are not someoneyou want to do business with. You can do it yourself for free. Just go to craigslist and select your city.
At the top left click on post ad and follow the prompts to create your ad. You can post every 48 hrs and it is completely free.

Robert - You no longer have to post every couple of days. I stated above CL is SEO based now! In other words if your ad is ranking good enough it will remain at the top no matter how old it is.

Guys- Post in all sections you find adequate ... Small Business ads, Household services, to name the most prevalent.

Listen I was skeptical too until I figured it out that its just like anything .. it just needs some fine tuning to work/run properly.

Here is a ranking tip

you know that weird writing most do for thier signature with the links to there home town .. do the same for your CL ad . Make a link called carpet cleaning yourcity that links to your webpage. HTML

Its an okay way of bringing in a little business,

but I just dont bother posting because craigslist is a place for people looking to save a buck not spend more

its like groupon, val pak, etc your advertising to "coupon clippers" aka no loyalty, theyll just call whoever does it cheapest

angies list is high paying customers for life, they will tip you 60 on a 200 dollar job just because they know they can trust you and trust that you do a good job

the first 5months on angies were not that great, once you have over 50 5 star reviews on there business explodes...

It is tough to get 1 review on angies because they don't let you advertise until you have reviews.

Nice add on craigslist OneBlueSummer. How did you embed the video?

Yes, I admit I missed that BIG AND BOLD thing you put on there Charlie, which is the price, and as much as I want to argue about the possibility of getting high end clientelle off of there is slim by advertising high price, I can't, because I have not tried your approach, it definitely worth a shot as soon as we slow down and I get to finish all the paperwork and taxes, geez it feels like I just did my 2012 taxes last week  Mad
Thanks Charlie, great thread bro :-)

Cool, Angie's seems like a tough nut to crack especially how to get your first handful of reviews. You should start a thread on how to take over Angie's list.
