For those of you that are still accepting checks as payment, if you received bad check/s and couldn't recover them, you need to report them to your local district attorneys office, I see a potential in the future for someone or a company to compile the list nationally, here's an example from Riverside county district attorney's website :

Yeah well just after this topic went live, I got a check from a client I have worked for about three time now. Last check he have me was fr a closed account. I emailed him. He said to go F myself for accusing him of such an act. He said the check was in the mail. Guess what no check has arrived in two weeks now. Figures.

I will knock on wood for you Mo and Tim, I got 3 in my first year in business, took 2 of them to court ( $ 300+ & $ 600+ ) and won the judgement but they never paid me, after that I stopped taking checks, my CC processing fees are about $ 300 - $ 400+ / month but that gives me a peace of mind. I got 2 chargebacks in 4 years but I won both of them after I submitted proof that I swiped their cards and got their signatures.

I only had one during my first year and was never able to recover it. Since then, I have never had a problem. Of course, like Mo said, it's one of the advantages of a small town.

ODIN wrote:if some one is out to cheat you they will all they have to do with a visa card is bitch to the bank and file a complaint that could tie up your money for a long time

I got a bad check a couple of years ago the tenant wrote me a bad one so since the tenant got it taken off his rent I went after the landlord since be benefited from the cleaning.  He started being a dick about it so I sent it to small claims court, the judge ruled in my favor for 265 dollars.

No, they can't tie up your $$ IF you swipe their card and get their signature, if you punch in the card #, the bank will definitely side with the customer, I wrote 2 charge backs up there but I actually had 3 and I won them all and got the $$ back in about 2 - 3 weeks, beats going to small claim court and not getting the $$ at the end anyway Razz

We use square card reader, I still take checks but were moving away from doing that.

The problem with taking lots and lots of checks all the time is you may miss the piece of mail that comes when one bounces, or a renter can have you out to do a job like what happened to Terry.

Customers offer checks all the time but I just say card is easiest and saves me a trip to the bank (even though I can use phone deposit)

if your selling lots of small items then square isnt a good idea, but with fewer larger sales its perfect. 2.75% isnt much to have funds authorized and guaranteed by square.

No square here, I use wireless credit card machine, my average is about 2.2 %, the highest is about 2.35 %, I think that was around summer where we process the most transactions where lots of customers are using rewards cards, I tried not to take amex unless from my repeat clientele because amex is notorious for staying behind customers, I love amex for my business and personal purchases cause they are generous with their points and they always sided with me if I have a problem with my purchase.

Bad checks can happen,

but much less likely to get a bad check if you refuses to work for satan worshipers.

Thus I'm not surprised Dp1 Has a problem with checks clearing.

Satanists write good checks, its just that the blood they sign them with wears off before you deposit them.

try square out if you havent yet

www.squareup.com go on there, punch in your address and youll have the free reader in the mail in a few days

You should see the dashboard you get online, makes taxes so easy and you can track everything you get graphs of everything, like what times of day you make the most money... days of week etc

individual items that you have programmed for set prices,

you get an interface on your ipad or phone too that can have pictures of each service or product, just like the Uscan machines at grocery stores when you punch in your vegetables etc

the interface and dashboard alone are worth it

plus funds are guaranteed once it authorizes

And pay 0.5 % more which equals about $ 1500 per year ? No thanks :-)
My provider also guarantees funds once the transaction goes through.
Thanks again for the suggestion :-)

Curious, what do you say to a Satan Worshipper when you are done?

Is "Go to Hell" the proper comment?

Ive been using intuit. Its 12.95 a month but only 1.75%. No hidden fees. If u run a lot in cards its well worth the monthly fee. It should save me $1000 over square per year.
