Re: On the rode again
I like that era of bikes a great deal, I just can never ride one again.
After a terrible accident in my teens, I went out and bought that Kaw police bike a few years ago. I dumped it 20 feet out of my driveway and broke my wrist.
I sold it 2 weeks later to a guy from Texas. He flew in, told me about how he was practically born on a bike, paid me cash, and rode it into a parked car at about the exact same spot that I dumped it.
Good luck with it Mo, but BE CAREFUL...they don't call them "donor cycles" for nothing.

LOL "Donor Cycles"......That's new one to me, haven't heard it before.
Best way to enjoy riding a Motorcycle is off public roads, so you don't have to dodge the idiots, poles, cars and other hard objects.

Any advice on the best way to remove the carbs from my magna - for cleaning - and then replacing them.

If it is like mine was, take the seat off completely and buy a good multi-carb synchronizer tool. Basically, it is just a gizmo with multiple glass tubes of liquid that allows you to read the vacuum on each carb at once. You will want to adjust the fitst carb and then adjust the second to the first and the third to the second.....etc.
One huge piece of advice on carbs...regardless of what kind of motor it is on (car, mower, cycle, etc.) is to never disassemble them fully!
Over the 15 years working in my parent's auto shop, I've seen that in 95% of the cases, all you need to do is clean a carb up well and replace the float needle (float if it is brass as well). Go any farther in the process and it will never end up running correctly.
So, if it has a plastic float, leave that part alone. Replace the float needle, then set the carb in a pan, and hose it down with a can of carb cleaner to clean off all the gunk. I mean hose it down well....maybe half a can to free up all the linkages.
Like I said, I've seen that work miracles on 95% of the carbs that I've seen. The other 5% are often warped or the throttle bushings were shot and you need to just replace them completely.
Re: On the rode again
I hear you Rob. I have a little experience dodging cars with this puppy which is one of the reason I stopped ridding. I used to be a bank courier in LA in my younger days. I rode daily in so cal from Burbank to Down Town LA, Orange County and cities in between. I actually rear ended Danny Devito in his black Rolls on Hollywood Way in West Hollywood.
Joe leave the strap of the boot that attaches to the carb to the manifold and loosen the one that attaches the carb to the boot, put some lube in between the boot and carb and let it soak and rock that puppy back and forth.

At least you had the height advantage on him.
I didn't like driving that route in a Jeep...can't imagine on a bike.
