Re: I just turning down work left and right
That's why I started asking almost every caller right off the bat.. are u just looking for the cheapest job possible or the highest quality.
Same stuff from the commercial side .. guy wanted me to go and measure it out after laughing and telling me his actual job is to find the lowest price and that's it.. i told him to call the store and have them count the ceiling tiles and call me back so I can do the math for him.

Re: I just turning down work left and right
used to have a massive commercial acct, 5 days a week plus alternating Saturdays... 5-7pm
was an entire hospital campus, but they were so cheap and the pricing was from 1985.
I only do occasional commercial work, seems that side of the business is just getting too competitive and saturated... at least with large commercial buildings, not restaurants as much.
all the guys that cant get residential customers seem to fight over those contracts and its just a "who will do it the cheapest game"
also large commercial buildings that are cleaned frequently and vacuumed a lot with no food grease are usually happy with porty work, so that makes it even more saturated....

Re: I just turning down work left and right
I hate to start getting picky, but have been this past year with no regrets.
Re: I just turning down work left and right
I lost a restaurant to a national contract in a similar fashion, I now service three restaurants under the national contractor for my price. Quality does matter to some people
Re: I just turning down work left and right
Commercial is far more cut-throat than residential and it takes just as much effort to find the work, but it works better for me schedule-wise.
Keep turning those offers down, they sound really bad even for this area.

Re: I just turning down work left and right
I tell the cheapies, "I understand that times are tough and not everyone can afford to have their carpet cleaned. That budget will allow you to get your carpet cleaner than it currently is, but not truly clean. There's a market for that, but I'm not in it. Thanks for your consideration."
Nobody can stand the shame of being told that they can't afford something that other people can. I learned that trick selling Hondas back in the day.

I like to tell them that anyone who can spray water and suck water technically can clean carpet, anyone with a shop vac and a pressure washer
just like anyone with a chinese black and decker from home depot can refinish your hardwoods
