The secret is doing the research. For example: Craftsman tools used to be made at the same foundry as Snap-On tools and were nearly identical in quality (Snap-on had slightly better teeth angles). Now Craftsman tools are made in a French Foundry (last checked) and are nowhere near the same quality.
If you do the research, you could buy the older Craftsman tools for half the price of Snap-On tools and get nearly the same product. Same applies for all items these days, you can't just go by brand any longer.
