Another mess
I just received a call from one of my realtors asking for my help. They have a lake cabin about 40 minutes away where the gentleman living there hung himself....and left a dog behind to destroy the place. Apparently, there was some water running as well so there is reportedly some mold in the basement due to the flooding. They want me to bid it for the estate which is highly motivated to get it fixed up and sold.
I plan to just spear head this one and not get too involved in it, but that never seems to end up that way. The mold abatement will have to be me, but I suspect that new carpet is going to be in order so I can avoid that job outside of helping to remove what is already there. Still might suck being so far away and the current temperatures.
I hope to get a look at it tonight.

Ugh, I don't think I can handle the eerie feeling of being there when someone had committed suicide, good luck Bob !

Re: Another mess
It turned out to be far worse....a diabetic hoarder. The floor was still spongy wet from what appears to be a toilet over-flow that covered the entire hallway and most of the downstairs living room.
The bedrooms were upstairs and looked okay, but the lower level was enough to make you lose an appetite for the day. The poor family is stuck dealing with it and they can't afford to renovate this place and it sounds like the gent took out a reverse mortgage a few years and had been burning through all the equity. They are probably better off just surrendering it and letting the bank deal with it.
I offered to go in and fog the place with a biocide to knock down the smell and hopefully reduce some of the health risks for those that will follow on the clean up. I don't think I want any more involvement than that at this point.
Worst part was that the dog was left on its own in there for better than a week. Dog food was scattered all over the place and the animal was taken to the vet for medical care.
Sad way to spend you final years....

Re: Another mess
My Grandfather ended up just like this guy as far as the hoarding goes. It is really tough on a family to find this out for the first time and try to deal with all the debts, affairs, grief, and guilt that goes along with it.
Helping people is one of the reasons I like this business.
