Re: Stair thread repair
Some times you make some not so good decisions and well you get caught red handed. I did on this one.
I had to replace the donor piece I got out of closet, I usually have remnant in the van. I didn't this time. Told them I would be back with carpet. Well I saw some at the side of the road around the corner. Cut some out and they saw me do it. Bad idea.
I told them what I was doing, that upset them pretty bad. Anyway, I went and bought the new carpet and went back to replace.
Don't get remnant carpet laying by the road. Trying to cut a corner and didn't work out well.
Hey the repair looks good though. But I can tell ya they won't remember that part.

Re: Stair thread repair
It happens, we all get stuck with a bad decision. When I finished that mold job a couple of weeks ago, I made the mistake of agreeing to install their bath fan vent out their gable at cost. I've been unable to get back out there since and they are calling me every other day about it.
I knew that I would be busy, but got caught up in the hero moment. Really regret that decision....live and learn.

Re: Stair thread repair
Good work Ryan.
What are the chances of them seeing you picking up a remanent on the side of the road? That is kind of funny though

Sometimes an apology just isn't enough. When you do something stupid all you can do is laugh at yourself for being an A$&.

Re: Stair thread repair
What i did on the top thread was use the carpet I took out from the bottom to do the repair. It blended in much better cause it was already worn.

Isn't it funny how everyone's watching when you make a mistake, but rarely, if ever, are paying attention while you've been doing everything right for hours.

Re: Stair thread repair
Man ur a nice guy. I always just leave the hole in the closet or just lay the damaged portion in. I just pull it from the inside corner so no one is ever gonna be walking there. If they have any concern I hammer down the tacks so they can't hurt anyone.
Re: Stair thread repair
Well........to be honest I tried to get out of that too, but before I could weasel my way out they said, "well they said over the phone you would replace the caroet in the closet". So I say oh yes, but I don't have any in the van so I'll have to go get sine and come back later today. That's the point it all fell apart. Lol.
But we do always replace the donor area with remnant from van. I just was not well prepared today.

Re: Stair thread repair
You should have just told them that you like to recycle and if it wasn't for you that carpet would have ended up in the landfills
Re: Stair thread repair
repair looks great regardless Ryan.
I have seen videos of guys taking the inserted piece and rubbing it on concrete to make the wear match, do you think that is a good idea or does it work at all?
Also another one ive been meaning to ask ya, there is a guy on angies list that has tons of great reviews for just carpet repair and his add states "completely invisible carpet repair"
how do you think he does this?
I read some of the reviews, he doesnt seem to do any cleaning just repair... but the reviews he has are all really good.

Re: Stair thread repair
They called the office (Lesley) after I was caught and told her the whole story. Lesley said, "we'll handle it!" good thing they didn't know I was the owner

Yeah that works, I just always forget to apply that to the repair process. Yeah, you can have some really good repairs when you use thread and bobbin. That really pulls the seams tight. I don't do that though, people in my town don't want that type of invoice. I actually heated that seam on the bottom thread when I went back and blended a little better, at their request. Usually, I just infirm them that these repairs will wear in over time.
The most impressive part of this repair is those stair corners. You can't tell, but there is no over lap at the corners, they meet edge to edge.
First time doing a corner repair. First time snagging carpet from the side of the road too!

Re: Stair thread repair
wonder if instead of rubbing it on concrete you could use sand paper and blend it like auto body repair... that would be funny
