Hey just thought I'd post you guy's something I've come across lately on the Briggs Engines.
Had a engine go bad on a customers unit and in checking it out I checked the valve clearence adjustment That should be 4-6 thousands on a cold engine I usally use 5K. The engine had 2000 Hr. The gap was over 25k I replaced with a used engine that had close to 2000k hr. also but still running I checked the valves on it and they wrer out of adjustment was also way out so I adjusted and all is good. But in light of this I will be checking the valves on Briggs Engines every 6 mo. because if the valves are off the the engine is not running properly. Kohler engines have a hydrolic lifter that is not adjustable. Just thought you could use this info.

The engine must have sounded like crap at 25k . I recall the adjustment intervals at 500 hours but I might be mistaken.

There are a few video on youtube Andy

Pull the plugs. Pull valve covers. Start on one side I use a Phillips screw driver hold it in the plug hole and turn the motor by hand slowly till you fill the piston reach the top and start back down turn it back to the highest point. That's top dead center both valves are closed. Now adjust the valve clearance to spec. All the Briggs Engines I've worked on is 4-6k both valves on both sides.
As for the engine running you didn't notice anything from sound because both valves were the same.

Short and concise instructions thanks Eddie.

If I need to check the clearance every year that means that some like Rob that runs his machine 8 hours at a time need to have the adjusted every 6 months
