When the explosion happens before your eyes.....
Let me give ya the cleaning reset.
Olefin loop pile Berber. Tight rows, low pile. It's white, white. This is a regular client. Elderly lady, widowed. Never had this type of problem.
Light soil level. Pre vac, PS S/O and extract.
Then this happened. One wand stroke and this explosion happen.
Not gonna tell ya what or how we handled it, or even the results. Let's first take some stabs at what was the cause of these mystery spots. You can ask questions or guest at the cause and we can go from there.
Have fun. I learned a lot.

My guess is, it's powdered graphite or makeup that wasn't pre-vac out completely. Or if not either of those two, some other kind of dry powdered substance that exploded and surfaced when the carpet was wetted........seen it happen mannny times!!

I'm going to guess insects. It looks like the black spots are on top and next to the fibers and not embedded in them.

Re: When the explosion happens before your eyes.....
Why wouldn't cat litter (charcoal) debris been removed with the vacuum step? At the very least, it should have shown itself on the surface afterwards and prior to introducing water to it.
Either it is time to upgrade a vacuum or else there is something else at work here. I had a cat eat a box of crayons once and puked that all over the place which left chunks of paper in addition to the crayons, but never litter.
Just not sure that is the answer....

Dog chewed up an ink pen. A Fels bar will take ink out carpet pretty quick. Wet the spot, rub the bar on it, agitate a little and extract.

Re: When the explosion happens before your eyes.....
I used a g6 Kirby. I knew this was an issue in the past from previous cleanings just never this bad. This is the room where the box is kept. So I vacuumed extra good here. Remember it's tight loop pile. The charcoal bits were imbedded deep and when I took one pass with the wand it exploded like that.milspec6 wrote:Why wouldn't cat litter (charcoal) debris been removed with the vacuum step? Re: When the explosion happens before your eyes.....
With kitty litter I like to take the vac hose and vigorously rub on the carpet to put some high pressure on the fibers and remove as much as possible. Follow that with cleaning as usual and if you run into any problem spots, like in your example, fels seems to do the trick most of the time. That's it.
Re: When the explosion happens before your eyes.....
black cat litter? I didnt know what I was looking for, I thought the black was the design/ color of the carpet.
Re: When the explosion happens before your eyes.....
Cat litter starts out light colored until it gets wet, then it's dark gray almost black, and hardens and sticks...it sux. lolACpower1 wrote:black cat litter? I didnt know what I was looking for, I thought the black was the design/ color of the carpet.
It's pretty easy to miss it, or even not get it all vacuumed up when trying, especially as Ryan said, on a tight loop Berber. And once wet it hardens and sticks like concrete....lika sez it sux.

Re: When the explosion happens before your eyes.....
So here is what I had to do. No way this was coming out with the wand. So I decided to get the 360 and irrigate it out with some scrubbing. I used more water than I wasted or like too. I advised the client that wicking may be a problem and I would call back Monday to see how things dried out. All was well and I moved the cat liter box to the bathroom.

You might want to carry some tacky step-off mats like we use around radiation areas. They come in many sizes and prevent anyone from tracking dust (or kitty litter) after walking across them. They aren't real sticky, so a cat will not object to them...at least my sister's didn't.
When you come across a situation like that, you could make an instant sale and make life easier the next time around.
It's a thought anyway.
