How loud is your truckmount !!

On a video I did  Dave mentioned that my TM was loud. I ended up changing the muffler cause it was shot. I downloaded the DB app for my droid to test the decibel reading of my truckmount. 

I know these apps probably aren't as accurate as the real thing but for the sake of testing and uniformity , download the DB app and post your results here along with the size engine and blower. Let's do it!

I wonder about the accurracy of that App Mo, it seems really low to me.

My TNT with the 20 hp runs at 89 db and my Butler inline at 82 db. Just for a reference, the van at idle is 80 db without the machine even running. You were displaying things in the 60-70's.

I also found when testing my butler with the muffler and then the silencer that the sound level was the same regardless of where I stood by the van. Being inside the van might make a difference, but outside would probably be pretty close in all directions.

Try a different app and compare the results. I used "Sound Meter ver 1.5-6" by Smart Tools and it came real close to matching my Extech sound meter.

Mo, that app like Rob said is reading way low!!

I can tell you you're more in the high 80's or pushing 90.

The app that I've been using, and I found to be accurate and reliable is called: Decibel 10th.

I thought it was low too. I'll try the other apps tomorrow. Before replacing the muffler I thought the sound was coming from the blower but it did quite the engine down.

Dave what does your read ATM?

I measure mine standing 6' from side door, and I've gotten it down to low 80's at 3k RPM..........but that's not the only factor, the pitch of the sound is as, if not more important than the dB's. I've also got a deeper low pitch sound out of mine, which makes a huge difference.

Mo, in your video, I don't even hear eng noise, which is good. But that bad is there's a lot of blower noise, if you could tone that down, I think you'd be doing good.

Yeah it just a muffler on that blower.

Okay...call me naive but why does it matter?

Because a loud TM is annoying as hell when you have to listen to it all the time, like we do..........and if you have a heart, think about the neighbors, esp. when you're doing that late commercial job, and they're trying to sleep.

I bet that's the problem, if you had a blower silencer, like most do, you would get the deeper bass tone, which makes a big difference.

I'm sure Les uses them because they're cheaper and they fit his, "buy replacement parts anywhere" motto. But it sure isn't the quietest method for a blower.

Mo, where's that video of us at Tony's when I was explaining this (like the retard I am) quieting down stuff? I know my TM was still pretty loud then, as I was in the middle of the process of making it less obnoxious then.

But maybe it would shed some light on this?

Thats when I was using my ETM is was louder than your without your mods. That vid should be in the video library

You might be surprised how much noise the machine makes no matter what kind of muffler and silencer you use. I finally had to add 3/4 in. rubber sheeting from a refrigeration supply. I glued it to the inside of the camper shell on my night truck. It made a huge difference.

It's amazing how much sound is reflected out of the van/truck/trailer that the TM is in. Regardless of how well the exhaust are silenced/muffled, you still get a lot of the reflective noise coming out.

About a year ago I spent a lot of time researching, testing and working on this noise stuff, and learned a lot........but never did do the sound insulation to the inside of my van that I knew would really help. Maybe I will when I get a new van. ..

Just like in music, it is the tone that is more important than volume.  I had that semi-truck muffler on my butler and although it was 89 db, it was at a pitch that left your ears ringing all night.

Mo, you could try the welded thrush mufflers on that TNT, they are the same size, but much thicker metal.  Not sure if it will lower the volume any, but the tone might be deeper.

Score another point for direct drive units, they are all pretty quiet when operating and is never a source of complaints.

Take the exhaust through the floor add a larger flow through SS muffler with at least a 4 ft exhaust pipe. You will be surprised

I believe it is a thrush muffler. I had a 2/1/2 inch threaded pipe welded to it.

Thrush makes 2 versions, the regular thin tin one and the racing welded one. I agree with ACE's suggestion, but if you don't have the space, try that welded one....they don't cost much, maybe $40.
