Taking on winter
I just got an email from my brother showing the Hawaii sunrise where he relocates during the winter. This is the wealthy brother of mine that has the ability to relocate his office as he desires. Sometimes he just works from home and other times he goes to live in Hawaii.....and yes, I'm jealous.
For me, I have to stay here and deal with winter. Tonight there will be -32 degree wind chills and tomorrow's high is expected to be about 5 degrees with a -17 degree windchill. Seems like I get the raw deal in the family. So, after I get done winterizing the van today, I have decided to take on winter.
The cold front is supposed to move into the area about dinner time with heavy winds and snow. Most people will be sheltering inside and hiding from the wind, but I have decided to not get pushed around this year. I'm suiting up and hitting the roads for a long distance run attempt!!
I've been falling apart lately and feeling damn old and sluggish, nothing like the guy who was cross-country skiing 200 miles above the arctic circle while carrying a 125 lb pack and a 50 cal. machine gun. Well, tonight I am getting back to the basics. I will not have the pack nor 50 cal., but I am attacking winter and getting my swagger back.
After-all, it is less than 3 months until I expect to launch full-time and I need to get some of that youthful attitude back.
Let the war begin!!

Milspec6, If your brother is here in Hawaii he's getting a good cold rain. Not as bad as Nebraska in the winter though. I hear it's going to be coooold in the mid-west the next couple of days. Bundle up!

I hope he gets sick!
I was supposed to join him down there in Feb. around my birthday, but he went down early without me. I'm not sure what is happening to those plans now. I haven't been back since I left K-bay in 2001.
Re: Taking on winter
It is 7 degrees outside with a -17 wind chill and stinging snow and I just returned from one of the best 5 mile runs to date. It wasn't all that fast, but I sure felt young again.
It really wasn't too bad except that North wind kept freezing my eye lids shut and it would even get under my balaclava and blew it right off my head a couple of times.
It sure isn't Hawaii outside, but I have some Jimmy Buffett playing in the background, a boat drink, and a little of my youth back. Screw the winter, I win this one.

Re: Taking on winter
I have to say that it really helped. We are experiencing sub zero temps all week and wind chills around -12 during the days, so I needed to change my attitude towards the forecast.
The knees are a little stiff today, but I am no longer staring at the forecast with trepidation. I feel more cold tolerant today and ready to start the week.
The mind is a funny thing, 45 degrees in June would have everyone in thick coats and hiding indoors. Take that 45 degrees in the winter and people are running around in t-shirts. You just have to change the way your mind interprets the same data.

I gave him some crap about the cold rain, but he says that it was sunny and 78 today. I guess he is staying in some villa on Poipu beach. Feel free to stop by and urinate in the pool would you?

Good for you milspec6. If you make it over here I'll buy you a drink with a little umbrella in it.

I ended up with a dislocated C2 disc Mo (the hangman's level) that left my future in great doubts for almost 5 days. It wasn't pretty, but despite some gravel in the neck, I seem to be good now.
Hopefully, things warm up a little next week or I'm going to refuse to clean for anyone from Canada. I think I have spent more time doing repairs than cleaning....spending far more as well.
Re: Taking on winter
Wow, Your body has this freakish regenerating quality Rob. Running cant be good for that injury
Re: Taking on winter
I think I pissed off Mother Nature on this one. The wind is howling tonight and there is supposed to be a -35 windchill until about noon tomorrow. No warming out of single digits until Thursday.
I already lost 3 shutters on the house, power is flickering at times, and I have no idea where my trash can ended up right now.
I should be getting a wonderful picture from Hawaii any time now.

No pictures but I's sitting at my computer in shorts and a t-shirt. My feet are a little cold however.
