Oil Selection Empty Oil Selection

Post by milspec6 Sun Mar 01, 2015 7:25 pm

I was servicing the butler today in preparation for the marathon work starting this week and then I screwed up....I'm out of oil for my blower.

I have a Tuthill Competitor 4007 blower which used a Pneulube ISO 100 oil, but I don't see a resource around here to get some and will have to order it.

Until it gets here, can I run a non-detergent SAE 30 or 40 instead? That I can find easily local.

I would strongly against that, usually blower oil is a lot thicker than the non detergent SAE 30 or 40, I would call Tuthill in the morning and ask for an alternative, if you're close I would've let you use my blower oil, I always have a quart or two in stock for those "oops" moment Very Happy
Heck I almost have every prochem part in my garage by now, lol.

Oil Selection Empty Re: Oil Selection

This industry is either too smart or too dumb....really not sure which one it is.

I agree with you Dp, which is why I was worried about running something other than OEM oil. When I did an internet search, you come across a lot of discussion on other boards regarding this very topic.

Guess what? Many said that you needed to use at least a 50 wt if not a 90 wt SAE oil as an option to the synthetic oils out there. Anything thinner was just "too thin" for use in blowers due to heat created.

My head started to spin by all the information from many sources (cleaners and distributors / builders). Even sources noted that AEON was not compatible with the Tuthill blowers. confused

I even found a Hydramaster manual that lists a 30 SAE oil for use in the same blower as my butler. scratch

Doesn't anyone have the real answer to all this nonsense....is this industry full of people who are wandering around in the woods operating on what they "think" instead of what they should "know"?

I took your advice Dp (despite this long answer) and contacted Butler directly to place an order...I needed some more blower grease anyway.

Do you want to know the answer they gave me?

Here it is......

Wow, I'll be damned, that's crazy ! I guess I shouldn't open my mouth too soon huh, sorry Rob, my opinion was based on my blower which costs almost $ 5000, I wouldn't put any oil other than prochem recommends, so that I can yell at someone if I have to scrape $ 5000 out of my checking account lol!

I was thinking the same way man, we were in agreement until Butler trumped us with the joker.

I've been running synthetic in that blower for 10 years and now I found out that I could have run a quality 40 wt instead...I wonder how much money that would have saved me??

Well I'm a huge believer of synthetic, I don't think you're wasting your $$, I believe synthetic has a lot higher heat tolerance and therefore your blower will last a lot longer, I wouldn't change it to regular oil unless if it's an emergency like it is now.
I always use mobil1 in all of my vans and tms and knock on wood I never have any issues with the motors.
