A little weekend fun
Spend part of yesterday tearing out the heat exchanger on my Boxxer 427 to get it cleaned out. It has been way overdue to be cleaned.
Tore it apart and soaked it overnight in a real good degreaser and got it all cleaned up.

Wow, that thing looks huge compared to my butler...just how big is it?
Might want to get yourself a can of hvac coil cleaner....I've never found anything that worked better except maybe "Oven Off".

That's the same thing I was going to say, it looks really big.
So does it run hotter once cleaned out?..........
Does the blower exhaust go threw it??

The blower and the engine exhaust both go thru this, it is mounted under the engine. I have always had good luck just using a good degreaser and letting it soak overnight in a big tub of it, then I just spray all the junk out of the fins.

Cool, that Big Boy must make some pretty good heat!

Mine is about that size if not slightly bigger, but mine is separated from the exhaust tip, so just the box can be taken out.
How long have you had that 427 Tim ? I heard they're having some engine issues of some kind ?
I never understand these TM manufacturers, if they know their units are having problems and yet they didn't want to do anything about it and legally they are not liable either to provide some kind of compensations, that's just wrong !!

The machine is a 2005 and I have owned it since 2007. Yes they do have engine issues, they are known for blowing head gaskets (I have replaced many) I replaced the engine 2 years ago and the original engine had 4600 hours on it.dp1 wrote:Mine is about that size if not slightly bigger, but mine is separated from the exhaust tip, so just the box can be taken out.

Head gasket failures?? Could it be from back pressure by that heat exchanger design? Does it have an over-advanced timing maybe...that can cook a head gasket as well.
Might be able to have a good muffler shop build you a custom exhaust tube that allows less back pressure. Maybe a larger collector off the head or better run to the Hx?
Re: A little weekend fun
less back pressure.. less heat from exchanger
otherwise it would be free heat, gotta go oversized motor and choke it down to create a engine load for higher temps

Good point.....tough trade off with Hx that use exhaust heat.
