I get a call and the guy says, I have the whole downstairs that needs to be cleaned....can you guys do it?...(duh) he continues to tell me about the job, the urgency and I have to follow this guy in case its "not" the sales call I suspect it is.... anyway, he continues, turns out its Home Adviser!.... he has a customer needing my service now!!!!....then tells me about the cost/fees etc.....I may have been interested BUT with his technique I was aggravated that he was trying to bait me with a customer that may or may not have been real....either way I tell him I didn't care for his technique and wasn't interested.... He said FINE! who in your area could do this job for us??? then names my competitor.....LOL as if Im supposed to feel like I'm getting cut out of the deal now.....he went from bad to worse with me. I tell him to Google it! He says, Don't patronize me! complete idiot....the service may or may not be good but I wouldn't use them just because of the technique ....the way your service or products are sold speaks volumes of your company.

I know some that get 80-90% of their business from them with great results. It has a learning curve like many other advertising systems. If you figure the system out and play it to your advantage then home advisor can be great.

Its also much like yelp, without reviews on home advisor you will likely get close to zero business. The good thing is they dont filter reviews like yelp does so it doesnt take long to get to 50-60 reviews.

Also its not ideal for owner operators because you have to immediately call on the lead, as in right then and there... first 2-5minutes at least. It wont work if you call the lead after your done with a job they will have already booked with someone.

Service magic was extremely successful for us as a landscape construction company, this was before it went sour. Service magic's fall off was all completely due to the major economy plunge, so to stay afloat they did something very unethical... which was boosting "free project consultations" in their ads which lead to bogus leads.

The company was bought by who now owns home advisor for a very low cost because service magic was almost completely toast. Its not the best advertising but it isnt a scam.

The good thing is if you have any lead that you cannot get a hold of or you feel isnt a good lead, they will instantly refund the money spent. This means you need to monitor the program closely and keep good track of it, so if you schedule your jobs on a McDonalds napkin then the program isnt for you.

I agree, the business is a direct reflection on the owner. I would rather go under than become a dishonest person.

I absolutely hate cold calling, so naturally I would've cussed the sh!t out of the guy too but for something that might work, I might give it a shot.
I did that to a guy from Groupon when they were fairly new, they were looking for the 1st carpet cleaning company to run in LA market and he was very pushy, I hang up on him and in a few days he called me again, apologized and we finally talk and it ended up being a great run.
AC, are you still doing business with HA ? How much do they charge per lead ? Can anyone leave reviews ? Or just paid members can.
