I finished cleaning a small house this morning when the neighbor asked if I could look at his basement. It was flooded months ago and he was worried about if he needed to do anything else prior to rebuilding. I didn't have another job lined up so I went in.

The basement was fine mold-wise, but while I was there, there were contractors providing estimates on a new HVAC unit and Water heater. I tried to mind my own business, but couldn't....it was like watching a mugging in progress. I ended up getting involved.

The complaints were that the upstairs kitchen was not cooling down at all and the water heater wasn't lighting. Neither of which were damaged by the flood as that area remained dry. I looked at the two units and found that the kitchen was hot because the duct work leading to the floor register was no longer connected. Somebody separated it and capped the end with tape. Three minutes and they had air flow to the kitchen again.

The water heater was fine as well. The thermostat was turned all the way down for some reason so it would not light. Adjusted to normal setting.....hot water restored. In both cases, the same ones providing the estimates were the same ones who came out 3 days before to inspect the systems. Neither one claims to have touched anything.

Just like that, saved them over $4,000 in less than 10 minutes....I made nothing except some good will and new fans.

Thirty minutes later, ran into a lady who I did a mold job for years ago, but didn't charge her as her husband was in a horrible car crash and was paralyzed with some mental complications. I didn't want to add to her troubles back then and just never sent the invoice.

She actually gave me a hug when she saw me and said thanks.

Tally for the day. One tiny carpet job that only grossed truck minimum of $100, but 2 very happy couples that I was able to help out. I tell you, I felt like I was Jonathan Smith today. Not the best business plan, but it sure made dinner taste better at the end of the day.

Boy is that the truth Matt, you don't get anything but grief punching the clock. Feeling pretty good right now, there is always time to make money the next day.

Days like this make me consider writing a book. Even have the title for it, "The Homeowner's Manual".

When we were kids, you were taught about household repairs. Mainly because those homes always needed repairs and it was expensive to hire people to do it. I guess it still is expensive, but today's generation are buying homes without having that education.....and getting fleeced by contractors because of it.

If a house came with an owners manual, that would help. Might have to be a video series though as nobody reads in this generation either.
