kunkle valve Empty kunkle valve

Post by procarpet Tue Jul 01, 2014 6:57 pm

I currently have a spring loaded vac relief valve on the top of my waste tank. I was wondering if any of you have removed the spring relief and replaced with a kunkle valve or similar? And do you think it would increase cfms if I did such a mod? It just seems to me that the spring and nut setup is doomed for inefficiency. Also, there is a pre filter box with a mesh bag by the hose reel and a round filter where the relief valve and vacuum line connect to the waste tank. Would I screw up the blower badly if I removed the second filter? I bet that filter robs a lot of vac

I have only worked with the spring style vac relief valve. As for changing the valve to increase CFM's I don't see how as the only time the valve open is when the factory 13-14 Hg. Of lift which is reached with a full vac load or no air flow through vac hose.
As for the filter Bx setup sounds like a white magic unit. Anyway do not remove the filter in the waste tank just keep it clean and free of holes it's the last line of protection for your blower. As for the other it's job is the same as the rc99 it catches the large debri before it gets in the waste tank clean it daily and you could get by cleaning the other weekly.

I went threw this a couple months ago, here's what I determined............

Unless you're running 300'+ hose runs, there's no advantage to one of these fancy valves......it's just not needed.,..

BUT, your relief valve should ultimately be on you blower and not on the tank lid.......your blower is what needs the protection the most, and cost the most $$$.....

Here's my thread...........

I have a bayco valve on my unit it will not increase on the CFM side but it will increase the lift the spring valve always leaks before it reaches the set point that is the reason you can feel an increase on performance specially with smaller blowers (33,36,45)

So the conclusion is replace the spring relief with something not on the tank. Then seal off the tank opening where the relief valve and tank filter are?

Yes, that's what I would do, and have done. Get a "Foot Valve" (same as what Judson uses) and put is the inlet side of the blower plumbing, if you want to prevent damage to your blower.  wink

well now that just opens up a whole other set of questions. Like where do I buy one, how much, how do I install? Its not like I have a custom garage I can take this to. I'm going to take some pictures of the wm blower and tank tomorrow and post them (hopefully)

I bought mine, a 2" foot valve from Home Depot, and I'm sure you can fine on Amazon too............Google doesn't bite.  wink

Here's some pics of mine to give you an idea.............

There's a Tee on the top intake side of my blower, one side of the tee goes to the tank, and other side to the foot valve.

No, I think. As I'm not clear on what your question is?
But let me try to answer anyways, and let me know if it doesn't......

The "foot Valve" isn't specific for a TM, esp. when ordered from HD, so you have to adjust it for your HG need/stetting, by adjusting the spring tension via the locking nut, see pic maybe this will help.............

Excellent visuals on that, yes you can and should adjust them to match your needs.

Best part is that they are pretty cheap as well.

That is my understanding of it. Adjust it according to what your gauge is reading and you should be fine.

I don't recall what they are set at when you purchase them....12 hg maybe?

I have a kunkle valve, they come on El Diablo Tm's. Can't say if it increases performance since it came this way. Pretty easy to maintain, just have to clean it every now and them. Easy mod if you have a hole saw for metal.

That's right, I forgot that the spring that came on the one I bought from HD was really light, so I bought a heaver spring, cut it to the right length, and like Rob said, adjusted the spring tension using my TM vac gauge until I got it open at a max of 14" Hg.
