Haitian cotton upholstery cleaning
I've cleaned Haitian cotton upholstery off and on for years. From time to time I run across upholstery with little brown spots. We have a high humidity here and I'm wondering if they are brown out or mold. If brown out solution doesn't work I'm considering peroxide. Has anyone had experience with it?

Re: Haitian cotton upholstery cleaning
I haven't run into haitian cotton in years, but I do a lot of mold work. Being cellulose and a humid area, it most definitely could be mold. You should be able to tell by the earthy odor or even by rubbing the area with a damp terry towel....you should be able to transfer some of that mold if it really was.
Peroxide is not a bad idea, cut some of the material out along the cushion zipper inside and test it first to see how it will react.

I haven't experience with it personally but from what I know it has to be a light peroxide ( under 5 % ) and sun light exposure will work wonder to accelerate bleaching and drying it out quicker, like Rob said just test it first though, even after you test it, I would find the inconspicuous brown spot and test a very small area just in case if it's not mold and you're dealing with chemical reaction that turns the spot purple *knock on wood*

Re: Haitian cotton upholstery cleaning
I don't think I've seen Haitian Cotton since the late 80's.
But I use to use ChemSpec HC Cleaner to clean it, I'm not sure about mold on it tho, never seen that.
Haitian with "little brown spots" sounds normal to me, especially in a humid climate. Those little brown spots are usually the seeds, and if in a humid climate can become larger, same as when it's cleaned improperly........as in over-wet, high PH used, or taking too long to dry.
Pics would be helpful, to figure out if it's just the normal brown seeds, or something more.

Re: Haitian cotton upholstery cleaning
never use brown out solution. That stuff is really nasty and doesnt work nearly as good as just about any encap product.
Used to use the brown out solution in the past but the smell is so horrible and it really doesnt work that well at all compared to joe's encap

I remember cleaning Haitian Cottons with Chemspecs Haitian cotton cleaner. You'd buff it it on a and towel it off, nasty stuff. I haven't seen one since the late eighties either.
