Re: Steam brite clean storm hose reels?
I looked at them pretty closely last fall. There was one at my local independent, so I got to play with it.
The price is great and you get a powered reel.....that part is awesome. The negatives for me was that the wheel was really wobbly and it was pretty tough to pull hoses off that reel due to belt drag.
I ended up just going with a Rokan manual reel with dual side-mount psi reels. I really wanted an electric, but these reels really wind very smoothly.

Seems like a good price and sure looks like it makes quick work of all that hose on the ground..
One day I'll convert mine to electric, it doesn't look hard.

I want electric too, but it has to free-spool well or else the work it saves you one end is negated on the other.
Re: Steam brite clean storm hose reels?
I think if I made one I'd use a clutch so it could "free wheel" when pulling the hose off. Or some way to disengage the belt tension to take away the drag.

I agree....that would be the way to go. I think the gear ones are better at doing that, much like a winch does.
Re: Steam brite clean storm hose reels?
Do they normally spin that fast. Never considered a belt drag glad you mentioned that. Usually my hoses wind off the reel too easily, What was the price browser didn't have cookies

Too easily? Does your reel have an adjustment? The butler reels have a tension knob, but I don't know if that is common practice.
Re: Steam brite clean storm hose reels?
I feel the same about the wobble Mil, those videos just dont sell it for me. Both videos you can see major wobble how long would it last like that?
Re: Steam brite clean storm hose reels?
I don't think the wobble would ever cause it to fail, just not centered very well before getting welded.
I think we could use a go-kart type clutch on one, free wheel very well.
My reels are the same, my hose comes off WAY to easy, if I try and grab and walk I end up with a pile of hose and a empty reel every time, I wish mine had a little resistance to be honest.

I don't think so Rob Ill have to double check
Re: Steam brite clean storm hose reels?
This is the tension device that butler puts on their reels...both psi and vacuum.
Re: Steam brite clean storm hose reels?
I think a good way to create a lil drag on your reel if need would be to do one of two things.......
First try by loosing the U bolt one one side, you know the one that holds the reel in the center at the hub, and just push the arm in towards the reel while tightening down the U bolt.
If that doesn't work, then put a thin washer between the reel and the bushing it rides in. I would think this would work for sure.

Re: Steam brite clean storm hose reels?
Floorguy has one of those reels, well one he bought direct from Nick. He seems to like it and it has held up good for him so far. Maybe he can chime in.
Re: Steam brite clean storm hose reels?
yup over a yr now... yeah it wobbles a little, but its not bad....and the slight drag is nice so it doesnt "spool" on your reel, which always bugged me on free hand ones.....
you have to tweak it every so often the 1st 6 mths or so...by taking a "link" out of the belt....which is nice because then you can make it as tight as you want..
the solution line reel is WAY loose...and i havent figured out how to make it drag a bit more...because it just keeps unrolling for a while lol...

Try Big washers, to take up the side to side slack.

Re: Steam brite clean storm hose reels?
It would be nice if someone would just make a motor tat you can just bolt on to your existing reel. Tony Dang? Devastor Reel? Cracker Reel? Anyone?
Re: Steam brite clean storm hose reels?
I think a bolt-on kit could be pretty easy......with the exception of the belt grove on the outer big hoop of the reel. Maybe just have to make an easily welded on (by your local welder), type ring that could be welded to the side of the existing hoop. ...if that makes sense?
Like I said, one day I'll make one, been thinking about it for a long time.

Re: Steam brite clean storm hose reels?
ya it wouldnt be that hard to make one into an electric. You could almost just extend the bar where it meets the reel frame (the rod it spins on) and run that to a larger motor. Wouldnt have as much leverage as a big belt over the big outer hoop so you would need a stronger motor.
either way going electric for sure this busy season, we wind up the vac hose a lot throughout the busy season so I feel its well worth it to streamline that part of the job a bit and save some strength for more cleaning.
what I like the most is being able to hit the electric wind and hold a rag over the hose as it winds up, get all the pine needles off and clean it a little each time.
