As some of you know im buying equipment and im thinking about maybe adjusting what im getting.

What are some of your percentages roughly? what do you offer?...carpet cleaning...water damage....tile cleaning....and how much of each do you do? thinking of adding something? deleting something?

I used to be a jack of all trades in this industry as I came into it from the bio-hazard side. What I quickly discovered is that you can make a lot more money being more specialized....less equipment costs, storage needs, training, etc.

If you are targeting residential, then I would specialize with tile, carpet, and upholstery. Water damage, mold, stone refinishing, etc. can be a real headache to maintain and I don't think is beneficial in the long run. I still do them, but just had to write a 5k check to the insurance carrier for my contractor's insurance....would love to drop that expense off my books every year.

If I was starting over again, I would set up 4 different companies with their own websites: High end upholstery, rugs, carpet, and stone refinishing. I would target high-end neighborhoods and build the reputation as the specialist in those areas. No more sucking trashed apartments or working for cheap customers that you have to "sell" to make a buck.

Maybe I should start over? Might have to think that one over actually.
