Pump Flow importance Empty Pump Flow importance

Post by milspec6 Wed Oct 16, 2013 2:28 pm

I've been looking at a few mounts lately and I am surprised by all the advertising regarding psi their pumps put out, but hardly a mention about the gpm it puts out.  After-all, the amount of flow is more important than psi, so why do so many cleaners get blinded by output psi?  Maybe I am wrong here, but shouldn't we care about the flow instead of the psi?

What is the gpm of the pump on your truckmount?  Do you even know?  Do you even care?

My cat 5CP puts out 4.5 gpm. I have a wanner pump capable of putting out 8 gpm but it will only achieve 1,000 psi but this more than you will ever need in my opinion.

My Cat 3cp1120 puts out 4.2 gpm. As long as I have enough flow to run my tools I'm happy. I found out my pump needed to be rebuilt because it couldn't keep up with my water hungry Rotovac. A set of new seals took care of it. So yes flow is just as important as psi. You have to have both in the correct proprtions to be effective.

PSI becomes important when you want to do tile. IMO, from all I have seen/heard, you will at times need more than 500 PSI for tile.

Not that I don't agree that flow is important too.

Hate to admit it, but as long as enough water is coming out of my tools I don't really care. I figure that's the manufacturer job. If I start to run out of water when I am cleaning then it becomes an issue for me. So much on my plate with the business, family and other entanglements that I try to only concern myself with things that need my attention. Probably should be concerned, but aren't

What machine are you running? Those are a pretty balanced set of numbers.

Most TM pumps will produce enough water flow 6-12 flow at 500 psi.. 1.25- 2 gallons per minute, for carpet cleaning. The heat and vacuum need to keep up with your flow output.

All I want to know is what kind of machine it is. What brand and model of pump. Most manufactures don't use a pump that size because of the cost a 4-5 gpm pump is the largest I seen exception of one in back of my shop it has the largest I've seen in 10 yrs. working on TMs so I'm just curious who else manufactured units with pumps that size the unit I'm working on is a stealth tristar by Steam Action.
