Re: Oriental Rug Cleaning
im interested in getting an off site cleaning set up someday, its hard to justify the costs though.
I would probably just do a simple wash pit thats homemade, with a power duster and use TM/ strong dry to scrub
I really wish strong dry would make a leather strap beater that you could put in place of the brushes, that would be awsome

No "Giant wringer" here, but I do clean them at my "plant". lol..........helps justify $2-3 sq ft for cleaning. And no "drying room" either, but I did make a drying rack.

I used to like to cleaning rugs not so much anymore. I think if I had the space I would like it more
Re: Oriental Rug Cleaning
I used to do binding, surguing, refringing and general repairs to high end rugs.

Re: Oriental Rug Cleaning
Nope, not in plant, always on site, with SS upholstery tools, charge $ 2 - $ 2.50 / sq ft for oriental and $ 3 - $ 4 / sq ft for Persian rugs, unless if they have multiple rugs, then I'll work a deal give them $ 0.50 cents off / sq ft or something.
I can't justify the cost and the labor carrying the rugs out load it up to your van and unload it, clean it, load it back and unload it back at custy's home and bring it back inside, what if you get the backing dirty in the process or customer don't realize that their fringes is loose in one spot and you missed that too in your inspection, too many things can go wrong.
SS tools will never soak the rugs to the backing, you don't have to worry about damaging the wood floors under the rugs by moisture, the only downside is you have to be on your hands and knees, but at $ 2 - $ 4 / sq ft, I'd do that all day

Re: Oriental Rug Cleaning
Thanks Krystal.....not many experienced this service and method. I only wish I had some pics or footage.
As much work as it was moving the heavy 10 x 12 and larger pure wool rugs while wet....I miss this rewarding service.....nothing better than cleaning a rug that was so soiled it was thought to be ruined and then cleaned to nearly new again....the rugs were so heavy while wet they needed to be floated on water to be moved into the ringer/rinser....I would somehow get the rug into a ringer by myself when the rug weighed probably 10+ times my weight....it was all done with momentum. The drying room was an additional area of challenge.

Re: Oriental Rug Cleaning
For a very short time, I used to have a wash pit and used the Demon to extract. I thought about going back to that, but using the ozone water...just don't have the space any more for that operation.
I like the idea of a strap beater instead of brushes...might be worth creating one of those AC.
I would love to be able to specialize in high end rugs and upholstery while dumping the carpet side. Build a nice shop by the house, a couple of employees, and be able to enjoy a slower paced career that paid well.
The problem for me (besides the cost) is that I don't find many high end rugs in my next of the woods. The upholstery market is pretty good, but you would need a large box truck with lift gate to pull it off.
If the market exists in your area, I think you definitely should get into that service.

Re: Oriental Rug Cleaning
Very true ....Rugs are scarce here too...when I see one I bring up conversation and they are quick to get defensive...until I tell them about thier rug and my background. In SoCal they are everywhere. OKC has a plant Im aware of and they do well...being the only one I know of must be enough for the state.
