Passion with marketing
I discovered that I have a great deal of passion when it comes to marketing. I find myself reading college level books in marketing and anything to do with it just grabs me. I thrive to learn what it is that makes people tic within the marketing arena. I get to "market" on a local level and a national level. I like to expose the BS and promote what works along with trying to find the new way of doing it.
Do you like the marketing aspect? not just advertising but marketing.

Re: Passion with marketing
I do find the psychological aspect of it interesting, but I haven't been drawn to studying it like you.
I probably should start doing some research, but my "to-do" list is getting pretty long already.
I just added 367 chairs to that conference room job this month for the Berkshire meeting. I need to start stretching now.

Right now it is just me and a helper. Plan to line the chairs up in rows and work it assembly line fashion with the helper returning them to the room as I finish them.
Re: Passion with marketing
lol....it amazes me. I love to analize why people respond 10 fold over another offer. I did a test one time and on a national level (expensive) sent 10k postcards to the end user of the product and had a 3% return on calls closing close to 2.3% of those. Then....I did another 10k postcards that were the same only adding a call to action and it increased from the 3% to 6.2% return and closed 6%.....the same advertising $ brought in almost 4% more.
I also ran ads in trade publications and got 25% more calls from the classifieds over a display ad.
Did you know you can increase sales closings by having 3 prices? If you give a quote for your cleaning and say its $200, They either like it or not and use you or not.....now if you gave the same $200 for say the normal service....then a $240 for slightly more value and even $275 for the golden treatment people do something very cool. anyone wanna guess what it is?

Re: Passion with marketing
They pick the middle price, right?
I'm sure that it works, but I never liked it. My motto on the van is that I will provide the best cleaning possible and that is what I do. I don't like setting up multiple levels of clean....getting the material the cleanest that it can be is my goal.
Some love that and some don't. I just enjoy the challenge of surpassing expectations and that has been my reputation to this point.

Re: Passion with marketing
Same clean at all prices!...just ad value...like disinfect or scotchguard etc....not a better clean at any level....all good and the same
The magic that happens is they find themselves picking one of the three rather than not at all. you gave a choice and instinctivly they wanted to pick one.

Never looked at it like that....they focus on the option presented and none of them was to pass on the cleaning. Pretty smart.

Re: Passion with marketing
I somewhat have interests in it, however I feel like misleading people if I give 3 different prices and give similar services, I would rather give 2 prices, one for cleaning which includes everything that they MAY need to get the carpets as clean as possible, and second price is for cleaning and scotchgards, I found higher end markets usually don't like upsells and they usually will find the higher price points due to their understanding of where the equipments been used, they wouldn't want same equipments used in their home was used in rat nasties apartments.
Marketing has strong relation with psychology, I'm more interested in psychology aspects of it, I like reading customer's reactions when I explain things to them, whether it's the carpet's conditions or price estimates / options.
If I'm not a carpet cleaner, I would love to work in psychology.

Another interesting fact is they try to figure out why the price levels....this is golden because what better way to have them learn what we do. It trains them and teaches why we are all different....weeds out the jacklegs!

Back when 70% of my work was residential. When I made a conscious effort to sell protector, about 70-80% would take the protector when I did this....
