Specialty chems for pot smokers
I have been noticing a lot more homes (and offices) with both odor and staining from marijuana usage. They mostly play dumb, but some come right out and tell me over the phone that their kids are heavy users and they want to clean up the bedroom while they go off to college.....probably to study music theory or agriculture
I will hold back my personal views on marijuana usage, but how long do you think it will take until someone comes out with a chemical line to treat the unique odor and oil staining that comes with the usage?
If usage continues to grow, I really expect to see a few dedicated jars on the local distributor's shelves within 3 years....maybe less. We might even see companies that specialize in it like the Smoke Damage guys do now?
Anyone else noticing this trend (you cleaners in Colorado not withstanding).

Oh man, I'm not a consumer myself but it seems like almost everyone else is here in CA now that they legalized it. lol
Just this past Friday, I'm doing a job in a multi million dollar house on the beach owned by a 60+ yr old lady and just after I finished cleaning her master bd rm she walks in and closes the door. At this point in cleaning in the hall right outside the door, and then the smell starts pouring out, I guess from the gap under the door, but it was strong enough to know what she was doing in there. Which really kinda surprised me considering her age........I always thought of it of more of a younger persons thing, but that isn't the case I guess.
When she did come back out, she seemed pretty mellow lol, and gave me a nice $60 tip.

Re: Specialty chems for pot smokers
Yeah, I must have done at least 3 - 4 homes per week of user, whether they look like they have been using for a while or they look like a normal family like a move out cleaning I did a couple of days ago, they're our repeat customer that's been with us for a while and I never smell anything before until a couple of days ago, Ben was cleaning and I was writing their invoice on a little built in cabinet off the hallway and I smell a strong Marijuana smell from the cabinets.
Ben also had a Marijuana dispensaries as his customer a couple of days ago, boy he sure wished he didn't get pulled over after that job, otherwise he'll get pulled out of the van and k9 will sniff the whole van

Re: Specialty chems for pot smokers
Seems like a trend is starting everywhere then. It is still illegal here, but unless you get busted with a trunk full, they tend to ignore it.
I can see it now, "Weed B-Gone" by Prochem.

Why not "Weed B-Gone" by RobChem?
May not have to go out and work so hard.

Re: Specialty chems for pot smokers
Hey Dave did the old lady invite you in the bedroom after she finished with her aphrodisiac?
I think customers may start requesting Mary Jane deodorizer
I can't believe this people are so addicted they cant wait till the carpet cleaners finishes before they light up

Re: Specialty chems for pot smokers
It is a HUGE problem here in Redding and surrounding areas I clean in. My van...really my Dev actually I swear I could light that thing up, or sell it!! Polys just love it, and bong spills everywhere.
It is really said honestly sooOOO many people have to go through life stoned...to be happy?? What a sad deal.
Also the quality of neighborhoods doesn't matter it is everywhere here.
I believe you to be correct about a cleaner coming out to handle it.

Re: Specialty chems for pot smokers
The funny or not so funny thing about it is that so many people claim medical benefits as a rational for its usage.
Take glaucoma (which I have) for example, marijuana is said to reduce ocular pressures and was one of the main usages for medical marijuana.
Well, it does reduce ocular psi, but so does alcohol and cardio exercise. In fact, cardio exercise does a better job than the others.
I don't see the medical community issuing a recommendation that glaucoma patients should start drinking more, so why weed? Last time I checked, smoking was very bad for your health.
Sort of like the old advertising when doctor's recommended Camel cigarettes over other brands. I think the medical community is often concerned more with $$$$ than the health of their patients.
Maybe we need to put our heads together and create a "MJ Cleaner" to beat the curve?

For one component, we would have to counter the sticky residue that leaves behind. When you encounter it, the fabrics are black from the soil attracting stickiness.
So, a solvent aspect would be a starting point.
Now that I think about it, this would be a perfect new service for me to offer. I used to do a lot of smoke damage work and still have 7 commercial hepa air scrubbers and several ozone machines.
All that I need to do is establish a good cleaning protocol for fabrics. Heaven knows I have been getting some good practice on them lately, so once that is accomplished....launch a campaign.
Like Tom pointed out, these cleaning issues cover the entire financial spectrum much like the way meth does and with more states legalizing it, the more of a need for this service.
I just found my fall/winter campaign.

Re: Specialty chems for pot smokers
Rob wouldn't one of the ozone machines you mentioned awhile back take out the odor?
Or is the odor not the main concern here, but rather the staining and soiling left behind in the carpet?
I ask because I'm still planning on buying one of the ozone machines you mentioned, and just want to know it's limitations?

Re: Specialty chems for pot smokers
Ozone only helps....cleaning and trying to fix the problem is a must for best results....but ozone will do big things. Im buying the 5 pack from them as well Davey. I used to use Ozone a bunch and got away from the company that did fire losses. They are amazing but only as an add-on when it comes to serious odor probs.
To answer your question...I would clean best as possible and ozone if it was that bad.

Re: Specialty chems for pot smokers
ya its legal state wide here so Ive done many many move out rental cleanings where the tenants were growing.
just smoking it is nothing, thats not much of a smell at all.. like 50x less saturating than someone who smokes cigarettes inside
but when they are growing is when you get the heavy oils and residues in the carpet, also many times the old grow room has water damage from hydro systems spilling over
my opinion is its like alcohol but not nearly as bad, if you wake up in the morning and smoke it all day then its a problem and an addiction.. but used socially in the evening or for medical reasons its no different than having a beer after dinner.

Re: Specialty chems for pot smokers
I have a pretty powerful ozone machine and have used it quite a few times..
it works okay but nothing to be too excited about... honestly it just sits in the truck and never gets pulled out.
the idea of ozone sounds better on paper than it actually works, it does work okay for smoke odors in a car

Re: Specialty chems for pot smokers
You will like those ozone machines Devon and the 5-pack is a good deal.
Davey, it was stated very well by Devon, ozone is a great tool, but not a miracle machine. If the ozone level is high enough AND it reaches the issue, it works very well, but cleaning is still part of the process.
Love my ozone machines, you would be amazed how many times you put it to work after you get one. Even helps to bomb the van once in awhile.

Re: Specialty chems for pot smokers
AC....im shocked you dont use yours much. do you market it? what brand? Ive used the Sonozaire and it was a really good machine....when using one you need to use it correctly...most think its a plug n play and its not.....they work best in low moisture and when they can breath fresh air.....they are a plan of attack and Ive made many people happy with using one.
Milspec....I used to do the van as well....I at one point had a room designed for closing in what I was ozoning...usually clothing from a fire and a before and after dry cleaning. I made a killing at car dearships! (this is why I want the 5)

no not at all, I didnt take it that way. appreciate the insight
Ive had some success in combination with a cleaning and deodorizing, but my experience is I wouldnt spend the money on one again.
I was looking to add it as a service for people moving into new homes they bought because it can reduce paint fumes, smoke etc
it was an expensive machine and if I could go back I wouldnt buy one again
Re: Specialty chems for pot smokers
Never thought of the paint smell. I like the cost vs income ratio....if you focus on one you can bank. At one time I think I had car dealers lined up for me to get to them....but I had a detail shop too....I had my wife as a secretary for my company (mainly phones) and she worked for her dads construction company (mainly payroll) and I needed an office at the time....so I rented one and it had a bay...I put a detailer in there and it was very worth while....so much so it brought me even more carpet work....when you detail a guys boat he says Hey! come clean my offices too. so, I had more money than sense at one time.....now I need both. lol
