Carpet dye issues
so this is more from a Realtor that i do work for...and being as i dont do any dye work, told him i would ask the brain trusts....
Renter in the sellers house dyes the carpet (probably to hide some bleaching issues)
Now the buyers say their feet are turning purple (i am guessing the color of the dye/carpet)
So with this bleed off, can it be fixed???
Just by giving it a good cleaning (such as a tye dye shirt needs washing after the dying)
do i need to use anything special??
or did they fook it up real bad??
I havent seen this job, and this is the only info i have gotten

Re: Carpet dye issues
I have never seen this happen. But if it's coming off with foot traffic I would think you can rinse the remaining residue off

Re: Carpet dye issues
Doug, I would offer to clean a room to see what happens. It sounds like the carpet might be ruined if they did it wrong. I would prevac, then clean and see what happens. I was always under the assumption that dying the carpet was not permanent, and that after several cleans the dye would come out.

Here's my WAG... They used RIT dye, for T-shirts.
Rinse the ever loving stuffing out of it.

I ran into that a few times and Freemind is correct, porbably the clothing dye. My advice is to avoid the vacuum and just flush the b-geebers out of it. Of course, that will only solve one problem, you still would have to deal with what damage was there that triggered the dye attempt in the first place. I guess I would recommend replacement instead...they can go after the moron they rented to for the funds.

I talked to one of my customers and he said to clean like normal and use a high acid rinse. He said that should take care of it.

Re: Carpet dye issues
I wouldn't run from it if the customer is your client, just explain some possibilities after the cleaning, there might be some ugly permanent stains, the dye may not come completely out, etc.
I would also start looking for carpet dyers around your area that do room carpet dyeing, that way after the cleaning you can refer the work to them and they can re-dye the whole place, room carpet dyeing is generally a lot cheaper than spot dyeing, this is assuming the carpet is nylon though, then again there's a possibility of someone didn't know that the carpet is polyester and dyed it anyway, that explains the dye bleeding, in that case then replacement would be the only way to go.

Re: Carpet dye issues
I would do a test room. Spray it real good with a color fast solution, then clean the heck out of it.
Re: Carpet dye issues
Doug, what was the outcome of this? Are you cleaning it? Just curious on how it turned out for you.
