I'm planning to take carpet repair class and ask around LA area and found only 1 place that does carpet repair class and they want $ 450 / person for 2 days class, is this the ongoing rate now ?
The last class I took a couple of years back was $ 325 for 2 days class, has the price goes up that much in the last 2 years ?

Sounds like the normal price. That course is actually kind of rare in this area (I've been looking for one) and seems reserved more for the West Coast.

Besides, that price normally includes free coffee, doughnuts, and lunch....bring your biggest eater and you might come out ahead.

look online, anything they teach at jon don can be found on youtube.

then get some 2x4s, build a makeshift room floor maybe 5x7 put some pad down and tackless strips then stretch a piece of remnant in there

that way you can practice with patching, some minor stretching. You can cut the remnant in the middle and practice seaming.

not the same as working in a home around corners, hallways, etc but still good practice.

Im in the same boat, going to for sure get a kool glide this year with some more repair gear

That's true, but since my IICRC is expiring, it's good for me to take the class since that will extend my membership for 2 more years, this might be the last class I take from them if I can't find something around $ 350, which I think is more than fair, come on think about it, the classes I attended usually have more than 10 students, at $ 350 a pop, that's $ 3500, I know they have to pay the instructor $ 1500 plus his flights and hotels, coffee and lunch for the students which probably comes out to be around $ 2500, they still make pretty good profits.

Don't forget to factor in the sales that it generates.

Let's not forget the conversation that we just had about raising your prices and charging what the market allows.  They are just a little more aggressive about it than us.

Building the trainer floor is an excellent idea, that is how I trained to repair stone floors.  Practice goes a long ways to success.

IICRC used to get me a couple of jobs a year but for some reason it stopped a couple of years back, not sure why, too busy to find out, I actually found a place about 6 hours away from me that charges $ 350 / person and $ 950 for 3 people, I know I have to pay for hotel and gas, which will come out to be more than $ 450, damn IICRC ! Consider it a mini-vacation.

I normally end up going to Minneapolis or Denver for classes, so I do understand your complaint, but I try to look at it as a mini-vacation.

New places to eat, swim some laps, catch a movie, or find the odd things along the way like the Spam Museum or World's biggest ball of yarn.

IICRC class, I hope that doesn't mean I have to be a member of there lil useless club?......for another added charge?

Also, I see AC mentioned the "kool glide". Man I've been wanting one of those for a long time, I think I'm going to finally pull the trigger on that.
Does anyone have one, or any experience with one?

Geez DP, taking this class with you is sounding expensive now, $450 for class, and now several hundred more for a kool glide. laughing

Well, at $ 450 is kinda hard to swing now in the winter cause I gotta have Ben go with us too so he can learn as well, maybe I'll wait til May to go. The guy said with 3 or more people he's willing to drop it to $ 400 / person.
And no, you don't have to be IICRC certified which requires a test after the class and you have to pass it to be certified.

$65??

The last time I tested out was a couple of years ago, but it seemed like it was much more....is it the same per course or is it by number of credits?

I guess I should just look it up, huh? I hope I didn't scare anyone with an inflated price...wasn't intended. Embarassed

You might still need to take the class later, for re-stretching.

But I'm thinking his videos would be a great way to get into repairs for now at least.

It sounds like if you went with the videos and built a training floor....you would learn more than you would in the class.

The certs might help in legal matters if you ever ended up giving a testimony, but how often could that really happen. After-all, you are repairing something that is already damaged?

Just don't let Mo's mechanic help you and you should be fine. Rolling Eyes Razz

its funny we did a carpet warranty cleaning, which IICRC claims you have to have their cert to do...

got the call, did the cleaning.. never once even mentioned IICRC

customer said guy from shaw looked at our website just to see what equipment we run and that was that lol

I would prob take the carpet repair class, so far not too many customers have asked about repairs but doesnt mean we couldnt sell them on jobs. I think weve been asked directly about 4-5 carpet stretches.

I like the idea of offering install services as well, just have a sub do it then sell an aftermarket service plan

If you wait for customers to ask you to repair or re-stretch their carpet, it's not going to happen often and you will do very little of that type of work.
The truth is, most people have no idea carpets and be repaired and re-stretched, so they won't even ask.
I'd guess 80-90% of this type of work I do, is because I point it out to them while doing the walk threw/quote for cleaning they called me for. I just simply tell them I can repair that hole or re-stretch those ripples out of the carpet, and I tell them I will give them a separate quote on doing that work....it's usually a min of $65 (for a small repair) up to several hundred more $$$ added to that job total....not bad if you show up to do $150-250 cleaning job, and leave with double or triple that amount. wink
