How much have rates changed
How much have you seen rates raise over the years? what is the lowest you remember? im talking reputable companies.....not the $6 a room guys. Residential....not commercial rates.
The lowest I can recall is .13 cents a sf (early 80s) and the highest I ever got was .52 cents a sf only because the guy said here is $500 (I dont recall the numbers but I do the rate) and I want it the cleanest possible! we didnt rate it in a sq.ft. price it was by the job and the custy gave the number....we were both very happy.

Re: How much have rates changed
I still remember cleaning for 11 cents back in '88. My highest might be the one coming up on Tuesday.
The guy calls me and says that his wife is demanding that the carpets be cleaned before she returns from a business trip. He tells me that it consists of 2 bedrooms and a hallway.....finishes with "I don't care what you charge".
I told him that a job that size will not very expensive, but then he replied that he paid the last guy $375.
Okay, fine with me.

Re: How much have rates changed
For residential I started as low as .18-.20 s.f and have always raised it a bit every year or two.
My normal now is .40-.45 usually. But I do charge more for a lot of the PITA condo type jobs, .50 or so.
The 6th floor Penthouse I did the other day was .55 for 800 s.f., and prob still wasn't enough for the amount of work it was.

Scary isn't it? You would think I would have more brains and money with all that time.
In my case, it was rarely full-time. I worked in California and North Carolina on the weekends while in the Marines (we didn't get paid too well back then) and then I cleaned for 2 companies while in college. All told, I have logged some miles over a scrub wand.

Re: How much have rates changed
Thanks for the encouragement, but I should be winning the 133 million dollar powerball tonight, so I should be covered.
If that doesn't happen, I guess I will have to redraw my plan.

Wow Rob, I didn't know you've been cleaning that long.
When I first started carpet cleaning working for someone, he ran deals in valpak for $ 49 / 2 rooms and then we would up sell like crazy, I don't know if that can be used for comparison but now I charge $ 0.40 / sf for 500 sf or less, anything more would be $ 0.35 / sf, portable jobs are $ 0.50 / sf.

That's how a lot of us learn to sell, or are forced to if we want to make any money.
I feel sorry for the guys that didn't have to do it that way.....
