TM engine oil? Empty TM engine oil?

Post by Ryan S Fri Sep 27, 2013 1:31 pm

I am at the end of the one year warranty on the Judson. So I was wondering what engine oil should I go with after a year. Synthetic or Non Synthetic? 10 30W? What are things we should consider about engine oil as the age of the engine increases?

Anything on oil is good for this one Eddie. Thanks

I'm a firm believer in Synthetic oil.....once an engine is broke-in (100 miles or so).

To give you an idea.................

And think frequent oil changes with Syn oil is the main reason my 20 HP Onan TM engine is still running great after 9200 hours!! :affraid:Which is 2-3 as long as the expected life of an engine like that.

To put hours into miles for perspective. I've always figured the TM engine running at 3k RPM equals about 60 miles in a car driving down the highway at 60 MPH with the engine purring along at about 3k RPM's. So 1 hour use = approx. 60 miles.

So using that fuzzy math my Onan TM engine would have 552,000 miles on it. Smile

Just my 2 cents here,

I am running synthetics in all of my equipment, but there is nothing wrong with dino oils if it is a quality blend and is changed on a regular basis. I don't think small engines are built with the kind of tolerences that auto engines are built to, so synthetics might not be a major gain unless you clean in the snow belt part of the country.

I have a customer that is running a cts330 Chemdry unit he was having problems with overheating and the motor using oil. When your motor only holds 1 qt you don't have a lot to spare. He had varnish in the motor also. I got him to let use the same oil I use Mobil 1. After the first 50 hr the oil drained out red and the engine var is gone. Now I Chang it every 100 hr no oil usage and no overheating problems that's been two years ago. I will use whatever the customer wants but I don't recommend what I don't use. I went back to conv oil once because it was cheaper right. Wrong I lost 3 mpg the first tank. I changed back. That's my two cents.

Conventional 10-30 for my kohler.
The important thing is to change it more often then not.

Could NOT agree more, Mobil 1 synthetic here, every 100 hours, with the factory oil filter, and don't tell me any oil filter is as good as factory's, you get what you paid for, go online, you'll be surprised how much cheaper factory oil filters are, I buy mine in dozen, last about a year.
