Dont buy $hit Auto Zone switches, lol

Go to Napa, they have a good universal ing. switch there, I used it for 15-18 yrs, and only had to replace once in that time.

Mo, does the power wire run from the starter solenoid to your ignition switch for power? If so and it's a Kohler is there a fusible link inline? If no fusible link could the solenoid on the starter be bad being you have replaced the ignition switch. Just a thought.

Not sure if you have a Kohler or Briggs but I have a 22 or 23 hp Briggs that came off of a donor machine with a good starter, regulator, carb. If you need it, it's yours.

You possibly got the wires hooked up wrong, causing the smoked switches??

Thanks for the help guys and that offer is appreciated Larry.

I think the problem might be the harness or ignition. I bought the exact switch from Napa. It's starting fine now but if I have this problem again I'm going to slam the little gas engine against the wall smash pc  I need to get a manual for this thing

Most owner manuals are available on-line...I know that Kohler is anyway.

Does it use a solenoid relay on that starter? Is so, that is your problem. I used to have an old Jeep with a faulty relay and it would act up like that until it finally shorted out in the open position and kept rotating the starter after it started....and the engine wouldn't stop until I pulled the harness on the alternator.

I was quite the celebrity in the parking lot that day. Embarassed

If it is a Briggs....the solenoid is probably the issue.

The mechanic called me yesterday he said to go to my auto parts store and get a solenoid for a 1973 Mercury Comet GT 302 for 10.00 bucks or so it's the exact same one that briggs uses but it doesn't come with the mounting hardware

Mo, common man, you outa know better. lol.........don't touch that inter filter without rubber gloves on, unless you like staph infection!!  laughing

Several years ago, I had a rash of staph infections. .....From what I later figured out was caused by basically not being careful enough, and doing things like touching nasty filters with my bare hands.

Trust me, staph sux, and leaves some nasty scars, I have one I my face and neck to prove it!  laughing

Oh and one word for the basket gasket lmao................Zip/Cable Tie!!.........well maybe 2 or 3 words!  Laughing  Put one on there at 12, 3, 6 and 9, with one where gasket overlaps itself, and you won't have a prob with that thing falling off!  wink
